Chapter 6 - The Policy

The life insurance document was real.

Daniel had a military life insurance policy.

That was not unusual.

What was unusual was the beneficiary change request filed six weeks earlier.

My name had been removed.

Gloria’s name had been added.

Daniel stared at the form for almost a full minute.

“I never authorized this.”

Agent Chen replied,

“We know.”

The signature was forged.

The digital submission came from an IP address associated with Mark’s office.

My stomach tightened.

Mark had not simply wanted money.

He had been positioning himself around Daniel’s death.

Daniel walked toward the window.

Outside, morning sunlight spread across the same driveway where investigators had arrived the night before.

“You think they planned to kill me?”

Agent Chen chose her words carefully.

“We have evidence of financial preparation.”

“We do not yet have evidence of a planned homicide.”

Yet.

The word hung in the room.

Daniel turned toward me.

“And the note saying ‘Daniel removed afterward’?”

“We’re examining context.”

I recognized the professional caution.

I used the same language with clients.

Never say more than the evidence can prove.

But my instincts were screaming.

I opened a spreadsheet I had created during my private investigation.

“There may be another connection.”

Agent Chen leaned toward the screen.

Three months earlier, Mark had purchased a significant amount of debt tied to his failing company.

Two weeks later, he increased insurance coverage on company property.

Then an electrical fire damaged one of his warehouses.

Insurance paid out.

Daniel stared at me.

“You think Mark caused it?”

“I think Mark benefits from disasters more often than coincidence should allow.”

Agent Chen asked me to forward everything.

By afternoon, another investigator contacted the warehouse insurer.

The fire had been classified as accidental.

Now it was being reopened.

Gloria called me six times.

I ignored every call.

On the seventh attempt, she left a voicemail.

“Rachel, this has gone too far.”

“Daniel is confused.”

“Mark made mistakes, but he is not a criminal.”

“Tiffany is young.”

“You are tearing apart people who love you.”

The message ended there.

Daniel listened beside me.

“She didn’t mention hitting you.”

“No.”

“She didn’t apologize.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“She still thinks this is about embarrassment.”

My phone rang again.

This time it was an unknown number.

I answered.

A woman whispered,

“Is this Rachel Bennett?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Helen Mercer.”

The notary.

My pulse jumped.

“I need to talk to you.”

“About what?”

Her breathing sounded shaky.

“The transfer papers.”

Daniel moved closer.

Helen continued.

“I stamped documents for your family.”

“I thought you knew.”

My voice hardened.

“You notarized my forged signature.”

“I know.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Sorry isn’t enough.”

“I know that too.”

She inhaled.

“But Rachel, you need to understand something.”

“They weren’t only preparing to take your house.”

I looked at Daniel.

“What else?”

May you like

Helen whispered,

“They were preparing to make it look like you had stolen from Daniel first.”
