Chapter 8 - Gloria’s Counterattack

Gloria did not surrender quietly.
By noon the next day, relatives began calling.
My aunt accused me of persecuting my own mother.
A cousin sent a paragraph about forgiveness.
Someone I had not spoken to in eight years messaged,
Family should stay family.
Then social media posts appeared.
They never used my name.
They did not need to.
Some people marry soldiers for love.
Others marry uniforms for benefits.
The comments filled quickly.
People speculated.
People judged.
People believed.
Daniel wanted to respond.
I stopped him.
“Don’t.”
“They’re lying about you.”
“Yes.”
“You want to let them?”
“For now.”
He stared at me.
“How can you be this calm?”
“Because they’re making mistakes.”
Gloria’s campaign confirmed something useful.
She was panicking.
Panicked people communicated.
Communications created evidence.
Within twenty-four hours, Agent Chen obtained preservation orders for several accounts and digital platforms.
Deleting messages would no longer erase the trail.
Gloria did not know that.
She kept typing.
She messaged Mark.
Keep story consistent.
She messaged Tiffany.
Rachel manipulated Daniel.
Do not mention insurance.
She messaged Helen.
You remember nothing.
Then she messaged me.
You have one chance to end this.
I showed Daniel.
“Do you want to answer?”
“Yes.”
“What would you say?”
He stared at the message.
Then slowly put the phone down.
“Nothing.”
I smiled.
“You’re learning.”
That evening, Gloria arrived at the house.
She was alone.
Daniel saw her through the security camera.
“She’s not supposed to be here.”
Technically, no restraining order had been issued yet.
I told him not to open the door.
Gloria rang the bell.
Then knocked.
Then called my phone.
Finally, she stood beneath the porch camera.
“Rachel.”
“I know you’re watching.”
I remained inside.
“You have embarrassed me enough.”
Daniel whispered,
“She still thinks she’s the victim.”
Gloria continued.
“I made sacrifices for you.”
“I gave you everything.”
“You owe me enough respect to speak to me.”
I pressed the intercom.
My voice surprised even me with its calmness.
“You gave me one thing that mattered.”
Gloria looked up.
“What?”
“A lesson.”
Her expression tightened.
“You taught me exactly what happens when people confuse love with control.”
She stepped closer.
“I am your mother.”
“And I am the owner of this house.”
“You need to leave.”
Gloria stared directly into the camera.
Then something changed.
Her anger disappeared.
She smiled.
“Fine.”
She stepped backward.
“But when Daniel learns what you did while he was gone, don’t come crying to me.”
Daniel looked at me.
“What is she talking about?”
“I don’t know.”
Gloria walked toward her car.
Then she turned one final time.
“You didn’t find everything, Rachel.”
She drove away.
For the first time since Daniel returned, I felt afraid.
May you like
Because Gloria was right about one thing.
I had not found everything.
