Chapter 11 - The Safe House

Police reached Mark’s apartment seven minutes later.

He was gone.

There were no signs of a struggle.

No blood.

No broken furniture.

His car remained parked outside.

His phone lay on the kitchen floor.

Daniel paced our living room while investigators searched.

Tiffany called Agent Chen crying.

For the first time, her fear seemed real.

She said Mark had been texting her all week.

He wanted out.

Gloria refused.

According to Tiffany, their original plan had been simple.

Take money.

Take the house.

Blame me.

But Gloria’s debts had changed everything.

She had borrowed heavily from people connected to Eric’s businesses.

When repayment became impossible, she offered access.

Accounts.

Identity information.

Charity funds.

Daniel’s military data.

I stared at Tiffany across a video call.

“You sold information about Daniel?”

“No.”

“Your family did.”

“I didn’t know.”

“You forged my signature.”

She started crying.

“I thought it was paperwork.”

I almost lost my temper.

“You created fake companies.”

“You redirected charity money.”

“You tried to destroy evidence through my bathroom window.”

She covered her face.

Daniel turned away.

Tiffany finally whispered,

“Mom said nobody would get hurt.”

I felt no sympathy.

“People always say that after someone gets hurt.”

Federal agents moved Daniel and me temporarily to a secure location.

I hated leaving my house.

But Daniel reminded me that walls were replaceable.

People were not.

At the safe house, I reviewed Gloria’s personal finances again.

There had to be a way to identify who she owed.

I searched property liens.

Private loans.

Business filings.

Then I found a strange transaction.

Gloria had sold a painting six months earlier.

She claimed it sold for eighty thousand dollars.

The buyer was Meridian Holdings.

Eric’s company.

But bank records showed no eighty-thousand-dollar payment.

Instead, Gloria transferred money to Meridian.

The sale was fake.

The painting transaction disguised debt repayment.

I traced additional payments.

One hundred twenty thousand dollars.

Two hundred thousand.

Then three hundred thousand.

Daniel stared at the totals.

“How much does she owe?”

“At least nine hundred thousand.”

His mouth tightened.

“For what?”

A message arrived from Agent Chen.

They had found Mark.

Alive.

He had walked into a police station two towns away.

He claimed Eric forced him into a vehicle.

Mark escaped when they stopped for fuel.

But he brought something back.

A recorded conversation.

Agent Chen played it for us.

Eric’s voice came first.

“Gloria promised the soldier’s accounts.”

Mark replied,

“You already got money.”

“Not enough.”

Then Eric said,

“If Rachel won’t sign, we move to Plan B.”

Daniel’s face became rigid.

Mark asked,

“What’s Plan B?”

Eric laughed.

“The widow signs easier.”

Daniel reached for my hand.

Neither of us spoke.

We finally understood what “Daniel removed afterward” meant.
