Chapter 2 - The Evidence Table

Agent Chen asked everyone to move into the dining room.
Nobody argued.
The same table where Gloria had once criticized my cooking became an evidence station within minutes.
Captain Brooks placed several sealed envelopes beside my laptop.
Colonel Whitmore remained near the doorway, silent and watchful.
Daniel sat beside me.
Gloria refused to sit.
“This is humiliating.”
Agent Chen looked up.
“No, Mrs. Carter.”
“This is an investigation.”
Gloria stiffened.
Mark attempted a more reasonable tone.
“Investigation into what?”
I opened my laptop.
“Let’s begin with the deployment account.”
Mark’s expression changed immediately.
I brought up six months of banking records.
Transfers had been made in irregular amounts.
Eight hundred dollars.
Twelve hundred.
Twenty-seven hundred.
Each transfer had been routed through an account controlled by Gloria.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“I never authorized these.”
Gloria folded her arms.
“You told me I could use the account for emergencies.”
Daniel turned toward her.
“Six years ago.”
“For one medical bill.”
Gloria’s mouth tightened.
Agent Chen pointed toward another transfer.
“What was this seventeen-thousand-dollar withdrawal?”
Gloria hesitated.
“Family expenses.”
I opened another file.
“The money went to Mark’s company.”
Mark stood abruptly.
“That proves nothing.”
I clicked again.
His loan application appeared on the screen.
Daniel’s name was listed as guarantor.
His military identification number had been entered into the application.
His electronic signature appeared beneath it.
Daniel stared at Mark.
“I never signed this.”
Mark’s confidence finally cracked.
“Maybe you forgot.”
Daniel almost laughed.
“I was stationed in Kuwait on the date this was signed.”
Colonel Whitmore spoke for the first time.
“And his duty records establish that.”
Mark sat back down.
Tiffany whispered something under her breath.
I turned toward her.
“You’ll get your turn.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“You think you’re so clever.”
“No.”
“I think you underestimated how easy it is to follow money.”
I opened the veterans’ charity records.
Three vendor agreements appeared.
Each carried my signature.
Except I had never signed them.
Tiffany’s face went pale.
Daniel read the company names.
“Silver Pine Events.”
“Lark Consulting.”
“T.M. Community Services.”
He looked toward Tiffany.
“What are these?”
I answered.
“Shell vendors.”
“All three ultimately route back to accounts controlled by Tiffany.”
Gloria slammed her palm against the table.
“That is enough.”
Agent Chen remained calm.
“Actually, we are just beginning.”
Gloria pointed at me.
“She has always hated this family.”
Daniel rose slowly.
“That woman is your daughter.”
Gloria said nothing.
Daniel stepped between us.
“She has spent years protecting all of you from consequences you deserved.”
His voice dropped.
“That ends tonight.”
Then Captain Brooks placed one final envelope on the table.
It contained copies of the property transfer papers Gloria intended to make me sign.
I recognized my name immediately.
But something else caught my attention.
May you like
My signature was already on the final page.
A signature I had never written.
