Chapter 12 - Gloria Breaks
Gloria was arrested the following morning.
Not for assault.
Not yet for conspiracy to commit murder.
Investigators arrested her on fraud-related charges supported by financial records already in hand.
They wanted her contained.
Her attorney demanded a hearing.
Her relatives posted online that she was being framed.
Gloria entered the courthouse wearing pearls.
Of course she did.
Even under investigation, she performed respectability like armor.
When she saw me, she smiled.
Not warmly.
Strategically.
“You look tired.”
Daniel stepped between us.
Gloria looked at him.
“You chose her over family.”
Daniel replied,
“She is my family.”
Gloria’s smile disappeared.
Inside, prosecutors presented evidence involving unauthorized transfers, forged documents, and fraudulent use of military information.
The judge denied Gloria’s request for unrestricted release.
Her attorney argued she had deep community ties.
The prosecutor answered,
“Those ties appear to be the mechanism through which much of the alleged conduct occurred.”
Gloria looked toward me.
For the first time, I saw panic.
After the hearing, her attorney approached Agent Chen.
Gloria wanted to talk.
I was not allowed inside the interview.
Daniel was not either.
But hours later, Agent Chen met us in a conference room.
“She’s cooperating.”
Daniel almost laughed.
“My mother cooperating?”
“Your wife’s mother.”
Daniel corrected himself quietly.
“Right.”
Agent Chen continued.
“Gloria claims Eric Vale approached her after learning about Mark’s financial trouble.”
“She admits providing financial data.”
“She admits authorizing several fraudulent transfers.”
“Does she admit the murder plan?”
“No.”
Of course not.
“She says Eric invented that independently.”
I looked at Agent Chen.
“Do you believe her?”
“I believe evidence.”
I respected the answer.
Then Agent Chen handed me a photocopy of Gloria’s handwritten statement.
One sentence caught my attention.
Eric said the overseas problem could be solved before Daniel returned.
I read it twice.
Daniel leaned over my shoulder.
“What?”
I pointed.
“She knew.”
“Knew what?”
“She knew Eric was threatening you before you came home.”
Daniel’s face changed.
Gloria had claimed she believed Eric was only intimidating me.
Her own statement contradicted her.
Agent Chen noticed too.
“She may be minimizing.”
“She is.”
I knew Gloria.
When she lied, she rarely invented complete fiction.
She removed the most dangerous part of the truth.
I thought about the photo of Daniel overseas.
Then about his unexpectedly early return.
“Daniel.”
“Yes?”
“Why did you come home early?”
“My transport schedule changed.”
“Who arranged the original transportation?”
He froze.
“Meridian.”
The room went silent.
Eric’s company.
Agent Chen immediately made a call.
Within an hour, investigators obtained the original logistics records.
Daniel’s transport had been changed twice before his return.
One earlier flight had been canceled after an unexplained maintenance warning.
The aircraft was never actually damaged.
Someone had manipulated the schedule.
Maybe to delay him.
Maybe to isolate him.
Daniel stared at the paperwork.
Then he whispered,
“If I hadn’t landed early…”
I finished the sentence for him.
“I would have signed nothing.”
He looked at me.
I shook my head.
“I would have fought them.”
Daniel squeezed my hand.
“I know.”
But both of us understood.

They only needed time.
