Chapter 10 – DNA Never Lies

Chapter 10 – DNA Never Lies
Arthur Hawthorne stared at the old photograph as though it might change if he blinked.
It didn't.
Richard stood clearly reflected in the hospital window, dressed in a dark overcoat, holding a newborn baby wrapped in a pink blanket. The date stamped in the lower-right corner read:
October 14, 2002.
The very day hospital records claimed Elizabeth Hawthorne had delivered a stillborn daughter.
Arthur's hands trembled.
"He lied," he whispered.
Lucas took the photograph and examined it carefully.
"There has to be an explanation."
Charles Bennett slowly shook his head.
"There isn't."
Emma stood silently beside them, unable to look away from the baby in Richard's arms.
"Why would he hold me?" she asked softly.
No one answered.
Because no answer made sense.
Arthur carefully opened the large envelope labeled:
For Father—After Richard Betrays You.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Elizabeth's elegant handwriting remained as graceful as Arthur remembered.
He began reading aloud.
Father,
If this letter has reached you, then Richard has already shown you who he truly is.
I wish I had believed my instincts sooner.
Arthur paused, swallowing hard before continuing.
I discovered that Richard had been stealing from Hawthorne Industries for nearly seven years.
At first, I thought it was desperation.
Then I realized it was ambition.
Lucas looked at his grandfather.
Arthur's expression had turned to stone.
He continued reading.
When I confronted him, he begged me to stay silent.
He promised to return everything.
I almost believed him.
Three days later, someone tried to force my car off the road.
Emma's eyes widened.
"He tried to kill her?"
Arthur nodded slowly.
"Keep reading," Charles urged.
Arthur continued.
After Emma was born, Richard visited the hospital.
He smiled.
He congratulated me.
Then he leaned close enough that only I could hear him.
He said,
"A dead sister leaves no witnesses."
Silence crushed the room.
Emma felt tears fill her eyes.
Arthur closed them for a moment.
His own son.
His own flesh and blood.
Charles carefully opened the leather ledger from the deposit box.
His eyes immediately widened.
"This isn't a financial journal."
"What is it?" Lucas asked.
"It's a record."
"A record of what?"
Charles turned several pages.
"Every illegal transfer Richard ever made."
Columns filled with dates.
Account numbers.
Offshore corporations.
Amounts totaling hundreds of millions of dollars.
Arthur stared in disbelief.
"My God..."
Charles nodded.
"Elizabeth documented everything."
Lucas looked at Emma.
"Your mother knew exactly what she was doing."
Emma smiled sadly.
"She wasn't running away."
"No."
Arthur's voice was heavy with regret.
"She was gathering evidence."
The bank manager returned with a polite smile.
"Mr. Hawthorne, is everything satisfactory?"
Arthur looked at him.
"I need a private conference room."
"Immediately."
"Of course."
Within minutes they sat inside a secure meeting room.
Arthur placed the photograph, ledger, and letter neatly across the polished table.
Then he reached for his phone.
"Who are you calling?" Lucas asked.
Arthur looked directly at him.
"The only people who can confirm the final truth."
Two hours later...
Hawthorne Medical Center.
Dr. Evelyn Ross, one of the nation's leading forensic geneticists, welcomed them into her laboratory.
Arthur handed her an envelope.
"I need an emergency DNA comparison."
Dr. Ross looked surprised.
"Today?"
Arthur nodded.
"As quickly as possible."
She opened the envelope.
Inside were several strands of Emma's hair collected from her hairbrush that morning.
Arthur then removed an old silver hairbrush from a velvet pouch.
Elizabeth's.
The brush had been preserved inside the hidden library for twenty-five years.
Dr. Ross looked between them.
"You understand that hair without a root isn't always suitable."
Charles smiled faintly.
"It has roots."
Arthur had never thrown away the brush after Elizabeth disappeared.
Some habits born from grief had unexpected value.
Dr. Ross nodded.
"I'll begin immediately."
The waiting was unbearable.
Hours passed.
Emma wandered quietly through the hospital garden.
Lucas eventually found her sitting beside a fountain.
"You okay?"
She laughed softly.
"I don't know."
He sat beside her.
"I've been thinking."
"About what?"
"The first day you came to the estate."
Emma smiled.
"I accidentally spilled coffee on your shoes."
Lucas laughed.
"You apologized ten times."
"I thought I'd lose my job."
"You offered to pay for shoes that cost more than your monthly salary."
Emma shrugged.
"It seemed like the right thing to do."
Lucas studied her for a moment.
"You know what my grandfather always says?"
"What?"
"Integrity can't be inherited."
She looked at him.
"It has to be lived."
Emma smiled.
For the first time since this nightmare began...
She felt she wasn't facing it alone.
The laboratory door finally opened.
Dr. Ross stepped into the hallway carrying a sealed report.
Her expression was solemn.
Arthur stood immediately.
"Well?"
She handed him the envelope.
"The analysis is complete."
Arthur hesitated before opening it.
His hands shook so violently that Charles gently steadied the report.
Arthur read the first page.
Then the second.
His knees nearly gave way.
Lucas caught his arm.
"Grandfather?"
Arthur slowly looked toward Emma.
Tears streamed openly down his face.
For several long moments, he couldn't speak.
Finally...
He managed only six words.
"Welcome home... my granddaughter."
Emma's breath caught.
"What?"
Arthur handed her the report.
Across the final page, beneath the official laboratory seal, one sentence was printed in bold.
Probability of biological relationship between Emma Carter and Elizabeth Hawthorne: 99.999998%.
Below that, another line confirmed what Arthur had prayed to hear for twenty-five years.
Emma Carter is the biological granddaughter of Arthur James Hawthorne.
Emma's hands trembled as tears blurred the words before her eyes.
She had spent her entire life believing she belonged to no one.
Now she had discovered an entire family.
But before anyone could embrace the moment, Arthur's phone rang.
He answered immediately.
The color drained from his face.
"What?"
Everyone watched him.
The caller spoke only one sentence.
"Mr. Hawthorne... Richard has just called an emergency board meeting."
Arthur frowned.
"On what grounds?"
The answer sent a chill through the room.
May you like
"He's telling the board you've become mentally unstable..."
"...and he's asking them to vote you out as Chairman tonight."
