Chapter 9 – Betrayal Inside the Family

Chapter 9 – Betrayal Inside the Family
The tiny red light hidden inside the antique clock blinked once.
Then it went dark.
Richard Hawthorne leaned back in the leather chair of his private office, watching the live feed disappear from the monitor in front of him.
A satisfied smile crossed his face.
"So," he murmured, "Elizabeth really did hide the original will."
His attorney, Victor Sloan, stood nearby with his arms folded.
"The bank opens at nine tomorrow morning."
Richard nodded.
"Then Emma Carter must never get there first."
Victor hesitated.
"You want me to steal the key?"
Richard looked at him coldly.
"No."
He reached into a drawer and removed an old photograph of Elizabeth.
"The key is only useful if Emma is alive."
Victor frowned.
Richard slowly tore the photograph in half.
"If she disappears..."
"The key disappears with her."
Victor understood immediately.
"I'll make the arrangements."
Across the mansion, Arthur was still staring at the tiny brass key resting in Emma's palm.
Twenty-five years.
Twenty-five years of lies.
And now the truth fit inside a piece of metal no larger than a thumb.
Charles carefully slipped the journal into a protective folder.
"We need to move quickly."
Arthur nodded.
"No one outside this room learns about the bank."
Lucas agreed immediately.
"The fewer people who know, the better."
Emma looked uncertain.
"If someone has been watching us..."
Arthur turned sharply.
"What do you mean?"
She pointed toward the antique clock sitting above the fireplace.
"I've had the feeling we're being watched ever since we entered this room."
Lucas looked around.
"You think there are cameras?"
Arthur walked slowly toward the clock.
It had belonged to his grandfather.
No one had touched it in years.
Or so he thought.
He carefully lifted the wooden casing.
His face hardened.
Hidden behind the clock's brass gears sat a tiny wireless camera.
Lucas cursed under his breath.
"How long has that been there?"
Arthur removed the device.
"Long enough."
Charles examined it.
"It's transmitting live video."
Emma felt a chill.
"So whoever planted it..."
"...already knows about the second key."
Arthur nodded grimly.
"Which means tomorrow just became far more dangerous."
The next morning...
The First National Bank of Manhattan stood surrounded by marble columns and polished brass doors.
Emma wore a simple navy-blue coat instead of her maid's uniform.
Lucas drove.
Arthur and Charles followed in a separate vehicle.
Two estate security SUVs stayed close behind.
Arthur wasn't taking chances.
As they entered Manhattan, Lucas glanced in the rearview mirror.
"I think we're being followed."
Emma turned slightly.
A black SUV remained three cars behind them.
It had followed every turn for the past fifteen minutes.
"Don't look back again," Lucas said quietly.
Emma faced forward.
"Who is it?"
"I don't know."
He pressed a discreet button beneath the steering wheel.
Immediately, Arthur's vehicle received an encrypted alert.
Possible surveillance.
Arthur looked at his security chief.
"Prepare for an interception."
Meanwhile...
Richard sat calmly inside his office.
Victor Sloan entered carrying a tablet.
"Our people are in position."
Richard nodded.
"The bank?"
"Covered."
"The street?"
"Covered."
"The parking garage?"
"Covered."
Richard smiled.
"What about Emma?"
Victor enlarged a live map.
"GPS confirms she's ten minutes away."
Richard stood and walked toward the window.
"I spent twenty-five years protecting this family."
Victor remained silent.
Richard continued.
"I built this company while Father mourned Elizabeth."
His voice became harder.
"I earned everything."
Victor finally spoke.
"And if the will proves otherwise?"
Richard's expression turned icy.
"Then the will never leaves that vault."
Outside the bank...
Lucas pulled into the underground parking garage.
Arthur's security team immediately surrounded both vehicles.
One guard opened Emma's door.
"We'll escort you inside."
Emma nodded.
They had taken only a few steps when—
A woman screamed.
"My purse!"
Everyone instinctively turned.
A man wearing a gray hoodie sprinted across the garage carrying an elderly woman's handbag.
Half the security team rushed after him.
Arthur frowned.
"It's a distraction."
The words had barely left his mouth when another man emerged from behind a concrete pillar.
He slammed into Emma.
She stumbled backward.
The tiny brass key slipped from her hand.
It clattered across the concrete floor.
The attacker grabbed it.
"Stop him!" Lucas shouted.
The thief ran.
Lucas chased him without hesitation.
The man darted between parked cars.
Security guards followed.
Emma tried to run after them.
Another figure suddenly stepped directly into her path.
A tall man wearing sunglasses.
Without a word, he reached inside his jacket.
Emma froze.
Not a gun.
A syringe.
Her eyes widened.
Before he could move, Arthur's security chief tackled him to the ground.
The syringe skidded across the floor.
Its label read:
Ketamine.
Emma's blood ran cold.
"They were going to kidnap me."
Arthur nodded grimly.
"Not anymore."
Lucas chased the thief up three levels of the parking garage.
The man was fast.
But desperate people made mistakes.
As the thief jumped over a concrete barrier, he lost his footing.
The brass key flew from his hand.
It landed beneath a black sedan.
Lucas tackled him.
Both men crashed onto the pavement.
The thief struggled violently.
Then suddenly stopped.
Lucas frowned.
The man's eyes rolled back.
Foam appeared at the corner of his mouth.
"No..."
Lucas checked for a pulse.
Nothing.
Paramedics arrived minutes later.
One look was enough.
"He swallowed cyanide."
Lucas stared in disbelief.
"He killed himself?"
The lead detective shook his head.
"No."
He held up a tiny broken capsule hidden inside the man's back tooth.
"He was prepared to die before talking."
Lucas looked toward the brass key lying beneath the car.
This wasn't an ordinary theft.
It was an organized operation.
Back inside the bank's private vault room, the manager unlocked Safe Deposit Box 317.
Arthur inserted the tiny brass key.
The lock clicked open.
Everyone held their breath.
Inside the box rested three items.
A thick sealed envelope.
A leather-bound ledger.
And a small velvet jewelry case.
Arthur carefully lifted the envelope.
Across the front, in Elizabeth's elegant handwriting, were six haunting words.
For Father—After Richard Betrays You.
Arthur's hands began to shake.
Lucas slowly looked at him.
"She knew."
Arthur nodded.
"No..."
His voice cracked.
"My daughter didn't predict betrayal."
He looked toward the sealed envelope.
"She survived it."
Before Arthur could break the seal, Charles noticed something tucked beneath the ledger.
A folded photograph.
He picked it up.
The image showed Elizabeth standing beside a smiling young nurse—Margaret Whitmore.
But it wasn't the women that made Charles stop breathing.
Standing several feet behind them, partially reflected in the hospital window, was another man.
His face was clear.
Unmistakable.
Richard Hawthorne.
Holding a newborn baby in his arms.
Arthur stared at the photograph in horror.
May you like
Richard had always claimed...
He had never even visited the hospital.
