Chapter 12 – The Enemy Strikes Back

Chapter 12 – The Enemy Strikes Back

The Grand Ballroom fell into stunned silence.

More than two hundred executives, attorneys, investors, and reporters watched as Special Agent Rebecca Collins of the FBI stood at the entrance, flanked by six federal agents in dark suits.

No one moved.

No one even whispered.

Richard Hawthorne forced a smile.

"There must be some misunderstanding."

Agent Collins met his gaze without flinching.

"We're here because of a federal financial investigation."

She held up a sealed court order.

"This warrant authorizes us to secure all corporate records related to Hawthorne Industries, including electronic devices, financial ledgers, and executive correspondence."

Richard spread his hands calmly.

"I'll cooperate fully."

Arthur watched his eldest son carefully.

For forty years, Richard had mastered the art of appearing composed.

But Arthur noticed the tiny signs.

The pulse beating rapidly in Richard's neck.

The slight tremor in his left hand.

The forced smile that no longer reached his eyes.

His son was frightened.

Across the ballroom, Emma stood beside Lucas.

She leaned toward him and whispered,

"Do you think they'll arrest him?"

Lucas shook his head.

"Not today."

"Why not?"

"They don't have enough."

Emma frowned.

"But they have the ledger."

Lucas looked toward Agent Collins.

"They still have to prove every transaction."

Emma nodded slowly.

The battle wasn't over.

It was only beginning.

Richard turned to the board members.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I apologize for this unfortunate interruption."

He smiled again.

"As you can see, my family is experiencing a deeply personal matter."

Arthur stepped forward.

"No."

His voice carried across the room.

"This is no longer a personal matter."

He lifted Elizabeth's ledger.

"This is a matter of corporate theft."

Every camera turned toward him.

Arthur continued.

"For years, someone inside Hawthorne Industries diverted company assets into offshore shell corporations."

He looked directly at Richard.

"The evidence is here."

Richard laughed.

"A handwritten notebook?"

He shrugged.

"Anyone could fabricate that."

Several board members exchanged uncertain looks.

Richard sensed an opportunity.

"You see?"

He addressed the room confidently.

"There are accusations."

"But no proof."

Arthur remained calm.

"I expected you to say that."

He nodded toward Charles Bennett.

Charles opened the evidence box taken from Safe Deposit Box 317.

Inside was a thick stack of documents.

Bank statements.

Wire transfers.

Signed contracts.

Original accounting ledgers.

Each page carried official bank seals.

Charles handed the first folder to Agent Collins.

"These are certified originals."

Collins flipped through several pages.

Her expression grew serious.

"Where did you obtain these?"

Charles answered simply.

"From Elizabeth Hawthorne."

The room erupted in shocked murmurs.

Richard's attorney, Victor Sloan, stepped forward.

"My client objects."

Collins looked at him.

"On what grounds?"

"The chain of custody."

Charles smiled politely.

"The documents have remained sealed inside a federally registered safe-deposit box for nearly twenty-four years."

Victor hesitated.

Charles continued.

"The box was opened this morning in the presence of bank officials."

Agent Collins nodded.

"That satisfies preliminary evidentiary requirements."

Richard's confidence slipped another notch.

Meanwhile...

Vanessa Sinclair sat frozen near the back of the ballroom.

Everything she had planned for her future was collapsing.

She had dreamed of becoming Mrs. Lucas Hawthorne.

Chairwoman of charitable foundations.

Queen of New York society.

Instead...

Every newspaper photographer kept zooming in on Emma.

The maid she had publicly humiliated.

Vanessa quietly reached for her phone.

She sent a single text message.

Delete everything. Now.

Less than five seconds later...

Her phone vibrated.

The reply contained only three words.

Too late.

Vanessa's stomach dropped.

Agent Collins closed the final folder.

"Mr. Hawthorne."

Richard looked at her.

"Until this investigation is complete, you are prohibited from destroying, altering, or removing any corporate records."

Richard smiled thinly.

"I understand."

Collins wasn't finished.

"You are also prohibited from leaving the United States without notifying federal authorities."

A flicker of panic crossed Richard's face.

It disappeared almost instantly.

Arthur noticed.

So did Emma.

Just then, one of Arthur's longtime accountants hurried into the ballroom carrying a laptop.

"Mr. Hawthorne!"

Arthur turned.

"What is it?"

The accountant looked horrified.

"Our financial servers."

"What about them?"

"They're being wiped."

The room went silent.

Agent Collins reacted immediately.

"From where?"

The accountant swallowed.

"Someone logged into the executive system exactly four minutes ago."

Lucas looked toward Richard.

Richard remained perfectly still.

Collins issued rapid orders.

"Seal the server room."

"Disconnect every external network."

"Nobody touches a computer."

Federal agents rushed from the ballroom.

Three floors below...

Inside the executive data center...

Rows of computer servers blinked rapidly.

A progress bar flashed across one monitor.

Deleting Corporate Archive...

87% Complete

A hooded technician typed furiously.

"Come on..."

The elevator doors suddenly opened.

Federal agents poured into the room.

"FBI! Step away from the keyboard!"

The technician slammed one final key.

Then sprinted toward the emergency exit.

Two agents chased him.

Another immediately pulled the network cables from the servers.

The deletion process froze.

92% Complete

One agent exhaled.

"We stopped it."

Another technician examined the system.

"Not completely."

He looked up.

"Eight years of financial records are gone."

Back upstairs...

Agent Collins received the update through her earpiece.

Her expression hardened.

She turned toward Richard.

"Interesting timing."

Richard shrugged.

"I've been standing here the entire time."

Arthur knew exactly what his son was doing.

Richard always preferred others to dirty their hands.

Collins looked toward Arthur.

"We'll recover what we can."

Arthur nodded.

"I believe my daughter anticipated this."

He opened Elizabeth's ledger again.

Tucked inside the back cover was another folded note.

Arthur unfolded it carefully.

Elizabeth's familiar handwriting filled the page.

If Richard ever realizes I copied the records...

He'll destroy every company file he can reach.

That's why I made a second copy.

Arthur's heartbeat quickened.

He kept reading.

The complete archive is hidden somewhere he'll never search.

In the place he despises most.

Lucas frowned.

"What place?"

Arthur looked toward Emma.

Before either of them could answer...

Emma suddenly remembered something.

The map.

Her mother's map.

The words written beneath it.

The truth sleeps beneath the old greenhouse.

Emma looked up.

"The greenhouse."

Arthur's eyes widened.

"The second archive."

Lucas immediately understood.

"That's what she buried there."

Arthur nodded.

"The evidence."

At that exact moment, outside Hawthorne Estate, a black SUV accelerated toward the abandoned greenhouse.

Inside sat Victor Sloan.

He lowered his phone after speaking with Richard.

"We're too late to stop the FBI," Victor muttered.

He pulled a gasoline can from the back seat.

"But we're not too late..."

"...to burn the last piece of evidence."

The old greenhouse stood alone at the edge of the estate, hidden among overgrown ivy and towering oak trees.

Within minutes...

Someone intended to reduce it—and every secret Elizabeth had hidden beneath it—to ashes.
