Chapter 6 – An Unexpected Ally

Chapter 6 – An Unexpected Ally

Richard Hawthorne's smile lingered just a second too long.

To anyone else, it might have seemed warm.

To Emma, it felt rehearsed.

Calculated.

Like the smile of someone who had spent a lifetime pretending to be exactly what everyone expected.

Arthur stood firmly in the doorway of the hidden library.

"Everything is under control," he said evenly.

Richard glanced past him again.

"I see you've opened the old archive."

"It was time."

Richard chuckled softly.

"I didn't know anyone still remembered it existed."

Arthur didn't answer.

The silence between the two brothers carried decades of unspoken history.

Finally, Richard straightened his suit jacket.

"Well, don't stay hidden all afternoon. The board members are arriving in an hour."

Arthur nodded once.

"I'll be there."

Richard's eyes drifted to Emma one last time.

"It was nice meeting you properly, Miss Carter."

Emma forced a polite smile.

"You too, sir."

Richard turned and walked away.

Only after his footsteps disappeared did Arthur quietly close the hidden steel door again.

The heavy lock echoed through the chamber.

Lucas let out a slow breath.

"I don't trust him."

Arthur looked at his grandson.

"You've never said that before."

Lucas rubbed the back of his neck.

"Because I've never had a reason."

He looked toward Emma.

"But something about the way he looked at her..."

He shook his head.

"It wasn't curiosity."

Arthur nodded slowly.

"It was recognition."

An hour later...

Emma was back in the servants' wing helping prepare lunch for the Hawthorne Industries board meeting.

She worked quietly beside Chef Martin, slicing fresh herbs.

Her hands moved automatically.

Her mind didn't.

Everything she had believed about her life had changed in less than twenty-four hours.

The silver key.

Elizabeth.

The hidden library.

The letter.

And now...

Richard.

She couldn't explain it.

But the moment she had looked into his eyes, a strange feeling had settled deep inside her.

Not fear.

Recognition.

As though somewhere in the forgotten corners of childhood, she had seen him before.

"Emma?"

She looked up.

Lucas stood in the kitchen doorway.

The cooks immediately exchanged surprised looks.

Members of the Hawthorne family never entered the kitchen.

Lucas ignored the stares.

"Can we talk?"

Emma removed her apron.

"Of course."

They stepped outside into the estate's rose garden.

Morning sunlight illuminated thousands of blooming flowers.

For a few moments, neither of them spoke.

Finally Lucas sighed.

"I owe you an apology."

Emma looked surprised.

"For what?"

"For last night."

He looked embarrassed.

"When Vanessa insulted you..."

"I should have stopped her."

Emma smiled gently.

"You tried."

"I didn't try hard enough."

She shook her head.

"That's not your responsibility."

Lucas looked down.

"Maybe."

"But I still regret it."

Emma studied him carefully.

Unlike Vanessa...

Unlike Richard...

Lucas seemed sincere.

"You don't have to apologize."

"I want to."

He smiled awkwardly.

"My grandfather always says character is revealed by how someone treats people who can't benefit them."

Emma laughed softly.

"That's a good rule."

"It is."

Lucas hesitated.

"Can I ask you something?"

She nodded.

"When you first saw my grandfather..."

"Did you recognize him?"

Emma frowned.

"No."

"Not at all?"

She thought for a moment.

"I felt..."

She searched for the right word.

"...comfortable."

Lucas looked puzzled.

"Comfortable?"

She smiled apologetically.

"I know it sounds strange."

"No."

He looked toward the mansion.

"I think he felt exactly the same."

That afternoon...

Arthur and Charles Bennett returned to the hidden library.

Every photograph.

Every journal.

Every document was carefully cataloged.

Charles adjusted his glasses while reading one of Elizabeth's notebooks.

"Arthur."

"What?"

"You should see this."

Arthur walked over.

Charles pointed to a page dated twenty-six years earlier.

Elizabeth had written:

Father says Richard has become obsessed with the company. I hope he's simply under stress.

Arthur frowned.

Charles turned another page.

Several weeks later.

Another entry.

Richard keeps asking questions about Father's will. He acts strangely whenever inheritance is mentioned.

Arthur's expression darkened.

Charles nodded.

The next journal entry had been written only days before Elizabeth disappeared.

Arthur felt his pulse quicken.

Elizabeth's handwriting was rushed.

Uneven.

Almost frantic.

I found documents Richard tried to hide.

Money has been disappearing from company accounts for years.

I confronted him today.

He begged me not to tell Father.

I don't know what he'll do if I refuse.

Arthur slowly lowered the journal.

His hands trembled.

"My God..."

Charles looked at him gravely.

"She knew."

Arthur nodded.

"And Richard knew she knew."

Late that evening...

Lucas knocked softly on Emma's cottage door.

She opened it, surprised.

"Mr. Hawthorne?"

He smiled.

"Please."

"Call me Lucas."

She stepped aside.

The small cottage was simple but warm.

Books lined one shelf.

Fresh flowers sat beside the window.

A framed photograph of Emma and her mother rested on the fireplace mantel.

Lucas noticed it immediately.

"May I?"

Emma nodded.

He picked up the picture.

Elizabeth—though Emma had always known her only as Elizabeth Carter—stood smiling beside a teenage Emma.

Lucas stared.

The resemblance to the portrait in the library was undeniable.

Then he noticed something else.

Elizabeth wore a silver necklace.

Not the key.

A pendant.

Tiny.

Oval-shaped.

He turned the frame closer.

"Emma..."

She walked over.

"What is it?"

He pointed.

"Have you ever looked closely at this pendant?"

Emma frowned.

"No."

"It was just one of my mother's necklaces."

Lucas carefully removed the photograph from its frame.

The image had curled slightly with age.

As he lifted it, something thin slipped from behind the cardboard backing.

A folded piece of yellowed paper.

Emma blinked.

"That wasn't there before."

Lucas unfolded it carefully.

It wasn't a letter.

It was a hand-drawn map.

At the top, written in Elizabeth's unmistakable handwriting, were four words.

If they find me...

Below that...

A map of Hawthorne Estate.

One location had been circled in red.

Beside it was a single sentence.

The truth sleeps beneath the old greenhouse.

Emma and Lucas looked at each other.

Neither of them noticed the tiny red laser dot moving silently across the cottage window from somewhere beyond the trees.

Someone outside was watching.

Again.

May you like

And this time...

The rifle was already loaded.
