Chapter 15 – The Boardroom War

Chapter 15 – The Boardroom War

By sunrise, Hawthorne Estate no longer resembled a family home.

Satellite news trucks lined the entrance gates.

Federal vehicles filled the circular driveway.

Reporters from every major network crowded behind police barricades, broadcasting live updates as the story of the missing Hawthorne heiress spread across the country.

Inside the mansion, however, Arthur Hawthorne's attention remained fixed on one goal.

Saving the company his family had built.

Not for himself.

For Emma.

The executive boardroom occupied the top floor of Hawthorne Industries' Manhattan headquarters.

Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the New York skyline.

A polished walnut table stretched nearly forty feet through the center of the room.

Normally, only directors attended board meetings.

Today, the room was filled with attorneys, federal observers, auditors, and independent shareholders.

At exactly nine o'clock, Arthur entered.

Emma walked beside him.

Lucas followed, carrying the blue ledger.

Charles Bennett rolled in a locked evidence case.

The conversation stopped instantly.

Every eye turned toward Emma.

Yesterday, she had been introduced as Arthur's granddaughter.

Today, she sat in Elizabeth Hawthorne's former chair.

The same seat that had remained empty for twenty-five years.

Arthur quietly pulled out the chair.

"It belongs to you."

Emma hesitated.

"I haven't earned it."

Arthur smiled gently.

"You were born to it."

She slowly sat.

Several longtime board members exchanged emotional glances.

Many had watched Elizabeth grow up.

Now they saw her daughter sitting in exactly the same place.

The board secretary stood.

"This emergency meeting will come to order."

Before he could continue, the conference room doors opened.

Richard Hawthorne entered with three corporate attorneys.

Despite the FBI investigation, he looked perfectly composed.

He smiled politely.

"Good morning, everyone."

No one answered.

Richard glanced briefly at Emma.

"I see the family reunion continues."

Arthur remained calm.

"Take your seat."

Richard did.

His confidence never wavered.

At least on the surface.

Arthur stood first.

"For twenty-five years, Hawthorne Industries has operated under false assumptions."

He looked around the room.

"My daughter, Elizabeth Hawthorne, did not abandon this family."

He placed the DNA report on the table.

"She survived."

Then he placed her diary beside it.

"She documented financial crimes."

Finally...

Lucas laid the blue ledger before every director.

A murmur spread across the room.

One by one, the directors opened the folders.

Inside were copies of wire transfers, shell-company registrations, offshore account statements, and handwritten notes connecting each transaction.

Richard leaned back in his chair.

"A very creative story."

Arthur ignored him.

"Our independent forensic accountants have spent the last eighteen hours reviewing these documents."

He nodded toward the lead auditor.

The gray-haired accountant stood.

"We have verified the first ninety-three transactions."

He adjusted his glasses.

"Every one of them matches Hawthorne Industries' historical financial records."

The room erupted.

One director looked toward Richard.

"You diverted company funds?"

Richard laughed.

"Allegedly."

Another director slammed his hand on the table.

"Answer the question."

Richard remained silent.

Agent Rebecca Collins entered carrying another folder.

"I have additional evidence."

She placed several enlarged photographs onto a display screen.

The first showed Richard entering St. Matthew's Hospital twenty-four years earlier.

The second showed him leaving thirty minutes later.

The third...

Displayed security footage recovered from the hospital archives.

Richard stood outside Elizabeth's room speaking to Nurse Margaret Whitmore.

The timestamp matched the day Emma was born.

Agent Collins looked toward the board.

"This footage was recovered last night."

Richard's attorney immediately objected.

"We haven't verified authenticity."

Collins calmly handed the files to the court-appointed forensic examiner.

"They already have."

The examiner stood.

"The recordings have not been altered."

Silence swept across the room.

Richard slowly rose from his chair.

"I've spent forty years building this company."

He looked around the room.

"When my father withdrew after Elizabeth disappeared..."

"I carried Hawthorne Industries."

Several directors nodded.

That part was true.

Richard continued.

"I made difficult decisions."

"I protected jobs."

"I expanded internationally."

He looked directly at Arthur.

"And now I'm supposed to surrender everything because of twenty-year-old accusations?"

Arthur answered quietly.

"No."

He looked his son in the eye.

"You surrender because you stole what never belonged to you."

Richard's expression hardened.

"I earned this company."

Arthur shook his head.

"You inherited opportunity."

"You confused it with ownership."

Emma slowly stood.

Every head turned toward her.

Richard smirked.

"And what wisdom does the former maid have to offer?"

Lucas immediately started to rise.

Emma gently touched his arm.

"It's okay."

She faced Richard.

"My mother spent twenty-two years hiding."

Her voice remained calm.

"Not because she wanted money."

She lifted Elizabeth's final letter.

"She wanted her daughter to live."

Emma looked around the boardroom.

"I didn't come here asking for a company."

"I came looking for the truth."

She placed the letter on the table.

"But if protecting the truth means protecting Hawthorne Industries..."

She looked directly at Richard.

"Then I won't walk away."

The room fell silent.

Several directors lowered their eyes.

One elderly woman quietly wiped away a tear.

She had served on the board alongside Arthur for more than thirty years.

Now she stood.

"I move that Emma Carter be recognized as Elizabeth Hawthorne's lawful successor."

Another director immediately spoke.

"I second the motion."

Richard's face tightened.

Arthur looked toward the secretary.

"Call the vote."

Electronic voting screens illuminated across the table.

One by one...

The directors pressed their selections.

Green.

Green.

Green.

Only three red votes appeared.

The final result flashed onto the large screen.

Recognition of Emma Hawthorne as Legal Heir

Approved: 14

Opposed: 3

The motion passed.

Arthur smiled proudly.

"Congratulations."

He turned toward Emma.

"Welcome to the Hawthorne Board of Directors."

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

She wasn't just reclaiming an inheritance.

She was reclaiming her mother's place.

Richard suddenly began clapping.

Slow.

Deliberate.

"Beautiful."

Everyone looked toward him.

He smiled.

"You've all made a terrible mistake."

Arthur frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Richard reached into his briefcase.

He removed a small remote control.

Lucas stood instantly.

"What is that?"

Richard's smile widened.

"A little insurance policy."

He pressed the button.

Nothing happened.

Richard frowned.

He pressed it again.

Still nothing.

A confused silence filled the room.

Then Agent Collins smiled.

"Looking for this?"

She held up a black electronic device sealed inside an evidence bag.

"Our cybercrime team removed the explosive trigger from your executive office twenty minutes ago."

Richard's face turned white.

Arthur stared at him in disbelief.

"You planted a bomb?"

Collins nodded grimly.

"It was connected to the evidence vault beneath this building."

"If today's meeting didn't go your way..."

She looked directly at Richard.

"...your plan was to destroy every document."

Federal agents stepped forward.

"Richard Hawthorne," Collins announced.

"You are under arrest for conspiracy, fraud, attempted destruction of federal evidence, obstruction of justice, and attempted murder."

The room watched in stunned silence as agents placed handcuffs around Richard's wrists.

He didn't resist.

Instead...

He looked directly at Emma.

A slow smile spread across his face.

"You think you've won."

Emma met his gaze without fear.

"It's over."

Richard laughed quietly.

"No."

He leaned closer.

"You still haven't met..."

"...the man who gave me the orders."

Emma's heartbeat stopped.

Arthur's expression darkened.

Richard wasn't the mastermind.

He had been working for someone else all along.

May you like

And somewhere beyond the walls of Hawthorne Industries...

That person had just learned Richard had been arrested.
