Chapter 13 – The Hidden Recording

Chapter 13 – The Hidden Recording
The old greenhouse stood in complete silence.
Once the pride of Hawthorne Estate, it had become little more than a forgotten shell of cracked glass, rusted iron, and tangled ivy. Nature had reclaimed nearly every corner of the structure.
Yet to Emma, it felt strangely familiar.
As though she had walked there before.
Arthur, Lucas, Charles, and two FBI vehicles raced across the estate, gravel flying beneath their tires.
Halfway there, Lucas spotted something ahead.
"A black SUV."
Arthur narrowed his eyes.
"It's Victor."
The SUV was parked beside the greenhouse.
Its driver's door hung open.
No one was inside.
"Move!" Agent Collins shouted.
Federal agents rushed toward the building.
The smell of gasoline filled the air.
One agent knelt beside a puddle spreading across the stone floor.
"They were about to burn it."
Another held up a lighter wrapped in a handkerchief.
"They left in a hurry."
Arthur looked around.
"They're still close."
Victor Sloan crouched behind a row of ancient hedges nearly a hundred yards away.
He watched through binoculars as the FBI secured the greenhouse.
His jaw tightened.
"So close..."
He reached for his phone.
"Richard."
A cold voice answered.
"Report."
"The FBI got here first."
A long silence followed.
Finally Richard spoke.
"Then make sure they don't leave with anything."
Victor frowned.
"There are too many agents."
"I didn't ask for excuses."
The call ended.
Victor slipped the phone into his pocket.
Then he reached into a small duffel bag.
Inside rested a suppressed pistol.
Meanwhile...
Emma slowly walked through the greenhouse.
Broken flowerpots remained exactly where they had fallen decades earlier.
A rusted watering can rested beneath an old wooden bench.
Arthur smiled sadly.
"Elizabeth spent every Saturday here."
Emma touched one of the weathered tables.
"My mother loved flowers."
Arthur looked surprised.
"How did you know?"
Emma blinked.
"I..."
She looked confused.
"I don't know."
She remembered her childhood.
Their tiny backyard.
Rows of roses.
Her mother humming while planting tulips every spring.
Elizabeth had unknowingly recreated a piece of the life she lost.
Lucas noticed an old iron shovel leaning against the wall.
"The map."
Emma unfolded the worn piece of paper.
The red circle pointed toward the center of the greenhouse.
Exactly where a large stone planter now sat.
Arthur looked at the agents.
"We need to move it."
Four men pushed together.
The planter barely shifted.
Beneath it lay a square iron hatch almost completely hidden beneath dirt and moss.
Agent Collins smiled.
"I think we found it."
The hatch creaked open.
A narrow staircase disappeared into darkness below.
One agent switched on a flashlight.
"There's a room."
Arthur looked at Emma.
"You stay behind us."
She nodded.
Together they descended.
The underground chamber was surprisingly dry.
Shelves lined the walls.
Several wooden trunks sat neatly arranged across the floor.
Each one bore a brass plate engraved with a single letter.
E.H.
Emma slowly approached the nearest trunk.
Arthur lifted the lid.
Inside...
Hundreds of neatly organized folders.
Financial records.
Photographs.
Audio cassettes.
Video tapes.
Company contracts.
Charles stared in disbelief.
"My God..."
Elizabeth hadn't hidden a few documents.
She had preserved an entire investigation.
Emma reached into the trunk and picked up one small cassette tape.
A handwritten label covered the front.
For Father. Play Immediately.
Arthur's hands trembled.
"There should be a recorder."
Lucas searched the shelves.
"Here."
An old portable cassette player sat inside another box.
Surprisingly...
The batteries were still sealed in their original packaging.
Elizabeth had left nothing to chance.
Lucas inserted fresh batteries.
Arthur placed the tape inside.
The machine clicked.
Static filled the underground room.
Then...
A woman's voice.
Soft.
Gentle.
Unmistakable.
Elizabeth.
Arthur closed his eyes.
Twenty-five years.
He hadn't heard his daughter's voice in a quarter of a century.
"Hello, Dad."
His knees nearly gave out.
Emma instinctively held his arm.
The recording continued.
If you're hearing this, then Emma is finally safe enough to come home.
Arthur began crying openly.
Elizabeth sounded calm.
Almost peaceful.
I know you'll blame yourself.
Please don't.
None of this was your fault.
She paused.
The tape crackled softly.
Richard fooled all of us.
Arthur lowered his head.
Emma squeezed his hand.
Elizabeth continued.
I copied every document proving he stole from the company.
I also discovered something much worse.
The room became completely silent.
Richard wasn't acting alone.
Lucas frowned.
"What?"
The recording continued.
Someone outside our family financed everything.
Someone powerful.
Someone who wanted control of Hawthorne Industries.
Charles looked toward Arthur.
"This was bigger than inheritance."
Elizabeth spoke again.
I wrote every name in the blue ledger.
But if you're listening to this...
It means Richard probably destroyed the first copy.
Arthur looked toward the trunks surrounding them.
"No..."
He whispered.
"The second copy survived."
Suddenly—
A deafening gunshot shattered the silence.
Glass exploded above them.
Everyone instinctively ducked.
Another shot.
Then another.
Agent Collins shouted,
"Sniper!"
Federal agents rushed toward the staircase.
Victor Sloan had taken position on a nearby hillside overlooking the greenhouse.
Through his rifle scope, he could see the underground entrance.
His finger tightened on the trigger.
"If I can't burn it..."
He whispered.
"I'll bury everyone inside."
A fourth shot echoed.
The bullet struck the iron hatch.
Metal screamed.
Dust rained from the ceiling.
Emma instinctively shielded Arthur.
Lucas drew him behind a stone pillar.
Outside, FBI agents returned fire.
Victor retreated behind a fallen oak tree.
He reached for another magazine.
Then froze.
A black helicopter suddenly appeared above the estate.
Its powerful searchlight swept across the hillside.
Victor looked up.
The helicopter wasn't FBI.
The words painted along its side read:
U.S. Marshals
A voice boomed through a loudspeaker.
"Victor Sloan!"
"You are surrounded!"
"Drop your weapon!"
Victor looked around frantically.
Agents were closing in from every direction.
He had only seconds to decide.
Surrender.
Or run.
Back inside the underground chamber, the cassette continued playing despite the chaos outside.
Elizabeth's voice grew quieter.
More urgent.
Dad...
If anything happens to me...
Promise me one thing.
Arthur's tears fell freely.
"I promise," he whispered.
Though she could never hear him.
The recording ended with six words that silenced everyone in the room.
Trust Emma... not the Hawthorne name.
Then the tape clicked to an end.
Arthur looked at his granddaughter.
For the first time, he understood exactly what Elizabeth had meant.
The future of the Hawthorne family...
May you like
Was no longer resting on its name.
It was resting on Emma.
