Chapter 16 – The Mastermind Revealed

Chapter 16 – The Mastermind Revealed

The click of Richard Hawthorne's handcuffs echoed through the boardroom.

No one spoke.

FBI agents escorted him toward the door, but just before stepping into the hallway, Richard stopped.

He turned slowly.

His eyes settled on Emma.

"You should ask your grandfather about 1988."

Arthur's expression changed instantly.

For the first time since Richard's arrest...

He looked genuinely shaken.

Richard smiled.

"You see?"

"He remembers."

Agent Rebecca Collins pushed him forward.

"Keep moving."

Richard laughed all the way down the hallway.

The sound lingered long after the elevator doors closed.

Emma looked at Arthur.

"What happened in 1988?"

Arthur remained silent.

Lucas noticed the conflict in his grandfather's eyes.

"You don't have to answer if you're not ready."

Arthur slowly sat down.

"I've spent twenty-five years regretting one decision."

Charles Bennett quietly closed the boardroom doors.

Only Arthur, Emma, Lucas, Charles, and Agent Collins remained.

Arthur folded his hands.

"In 1988, Hawthorne Industries was close to bankruptcy."

Emma listened carefully.

"The economy had collapsed."

"Our biggest lenders wanted immediate repayment."

"We had thirty days before the company failed."

Lucas had never heard this story.

"You never told me."

Arthur smiled sadly.

"Because I was ashamed."

He looked toward the skyline outside the windows.

"That's when a man named Malcolm Sterling appeared."

Agent Collins immediately recognized the name.

Her expression hardened.

"Malcolm Sterling?"

Arthur nodded.

"You know him?"

Collins exchanged a glance with another FBI agent.

"We've been investigating him for years."

Emma frowned.

"Who is he?"

Collins answered quietly.

"The founder of Sterling Global Holdings."

"The largest private investment group in the country."

Charles looked stunned.

"The billionaire?"

Collins nodded.

"Officially."

She paused.

"Unofficially..."

"We believe he controls a network of shell companies used for money laundering, corporate espionage, bribery, and financial fraud."

The room fell silent.

Arthur closed his eyes.

"He offered to save Hawthorne Industries."

Emma whispered,

"What did he want in return?"

Arthur's voice was heavy with regret.

"Access."

Arthur stood and slowly walked toward the enormous window.

"Malcolm invested hundreds of millions."

"He never asked to join the board."

"He never asked for voting rights."

Emma frowned.

"Then what did he want?"

Arthur answered without turning around.

"He wanted information."

Lucas immediately understood.

"Our research."

"Our patents."

"Our government contracts."

Arthur nodded.

"I thought he was simply an aggressive investor."

Charles sighed.

"But he was building influence."

Arthur looked at Emma.

"I didn't realize the truth until Elizabeth found evidence."

Emma slowly pieced everything together.

"So my mother wasn't only investigating Richard."

Arthur nodded.

"She discovered Malcolm Sterling."

Agent Collins opened the blue ledger.

She turned to the final pages.

"There."

She pointed toward a handwritten chart.

Elizabeth had drawn lines connecting dozens of offshore companies.

Every trail eventually led to one name.

Sterling Global Holdings

Lucas stared.

"My God."

Charles adjusted his glasses.

"Richard wasn't the architect."

"He was the inside man."

Arthur nodded bitterly.

"And Malcolm Sterling was the one pulling the strings."

Meanwhile...

Forty stories above Midtown Manhattan...

Malcolm Sterling stood inside his private office overlooking Central Park.

The office was elegant.

Minimalist.

Everything was black glass and polished steel.

A television mounted on the wall replayed footage of Richard's arrest.

Malcolm muted the broadcast.

A young assistant entered.

"Sir."

Malcolm didn't look away from the window.

"Richard failed."

"Yes."

The assistant hesitated.

"The FBI recovered the greenhouse evidence."

Malcolm smiled faintly.

"I expected they would."

The assistant looked confused.

"You did?"

Malcolm finally turned.

He was seventy years old.

Tall.

Silver-haired.

Perfectly dressed.

His calm blue eyes revealed nothing.

"Richard was useful."

"But he was never essential."

He walked toward a large painting hanging behind his desk.

With one touch, the painting swung open.

Behind it rested a hidden safe.

Malcolm removed a thick leather folder.

Across the cover appeared a single word.

HAWTHORNE

Inside were photographs.

Arthur.

Elizabeth.

Emma.

Lucas.

Every member of the family had been watched for years.

The newest photograph showed Emma leaving the greenhouse only hours earlier.

The timestamp was that morning.

Malcolm smiled.

"So..."

"You finally came home."

Back at FBI headquarters...

Richard sat alone inside an interrogation room.

Agent Collins entered carrying Elizabeth's blue ledger.

She placed it on the table.

"You've had a long day."

Richard smirked.

"I've had worse."

Collins remained standing.

"We know about Malcolm Sterling."

Richard's smile disappeared.

Only for a second.

Then it returned.

"I don't know anyone by that name."

Collins slid several photographs across the table.

Richard attending charity galas with Malcolm.

Business conferences.

Private dinners.

A yacht in Monaco.

Richard didn't even look at them.

"You can prove we met."

He smiled confidently.

"You can't prove what we discussed."

Collins leaned closer.

"I don't need to."

Richard frowned.

"We already have someone who can."

For the first time...

Richard looked uncertain.

Across town...

Emma returned to the cottage where she had lived as a maid.

She wanted one quiet hour.

One chance to breathe.

The room looked exactly the same.

Her books.

Her mother's teacup.

The faded curtains Elizabeth had sewn herself.

Emma sat in the old rocking chair.

Everything felt different now.

A gentle knock interrupted her thoughts.

Arthur entered carrying a small wooden box.

"I almost forgot."

He handed it to her.

"I found this among your mother's things."

Emma opened the lid.

Inside rested a delicate gold pocket watch.

Beneath it lay a folded note.

In Elizabeth's handwriting.

Emma unfolded it carefully.

Emma,

If you're reading this...

Richard has already been exposed.

But he was never the person you should fear most.

Emma's heart raced.

She kept reading.

The man called Malcolm Sterling doesn't lose.

If he realizes you know the truth...

He'll come for you.

Arthur looked at Emma.

Neither of them noticed the black luxury sedan parked quietly beyond the estate gates.

Inside, Malcolm Sterling watched the cottage through tinted windows.

He lowered a pair of binoculars.

Then spoke calmly to the driver.

"Prepare the plane."

The driver looked surprised.

"We're leaving?"

Malcolm smiled.

"No."

He looked toward Emma's cottage once more.

"We're introducing ourselves."

And for the first time since this nightmare began...

The Hawthorne family was about to face the man who had orchestrated every tragedy from the shadows for nearly three decades.
