Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The silence in the grand cathedral was absolute, thick, and suffocating. It was the kind of quiet that follows a devastating car crash, where the dust hasn’t yet settled, and no one knows who is dead or alive.

Victoria Sterling, a woman whose name alone could move millions in the stock market and ruin lives with a single phone call, was on her knees.

The torn remnants of Elena’s custom Chantilly lace gown lay pooling around her, but Victoria didn’t see the ruined fabric. Her eyes, wide and bloodshot, were locked onto the small, imperfectly shaped piece of jade resting in Elena’s trembling palm.

“Where…” Victoria choked out, her voice stripped of its usual commanding velvet. It sounded like tearing sandpaper. “Where did you get that?”

Elena took a shaky step back, pulling the ripped bodice of her dress against her chest to cover herself. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs. She looked at Julian, the man she was supposed to marry, whose face had gone chalk-white.

“I told you,” Elena said, her voice shaking but defensive. “I’ve had it since I was a baby. It was on me when they found me at the fire station.”

Victoria let out a sound that wasn’t human. It was a guttural, wounded keen that echoed off the vaulted ceilings of the ballroom. She reached out with a trembling, manicured hand, her diamond rings catching the light.

“Let me see it. Let me see the back of it.”

Julian finally broke from his paralysis. He stepped between his mother and his bride, his broad shoulders shielding Elena. “Mother, stop. You’ve done enough. You’ve humiliated her, you’ve ruined the wedding, you’ve—”

“Shut up, Julian!” Victoria screamed. The sheer force of it made the front row of guests—senators, CEOs, and socialites—flinch. “The back of the pendant! There’s an engraving. A tiny ‘V’ intertwined with an ‘E’. Victoria and Elizabeth. Tell me it’s there!”

Elena looked down at the jade. Her hands were shaking so badly she almost dropped it again. She flipped it over. There, etched into the dark green stone, microscopic but unmistakable, was the intertwined crest.

“Yes,” Elena whispered.

Victoria collapsed entirely, her forehead hitting the cold marble floor as she began to sob hysterically.

Julian turned to Elena, his mind fracturing in real-time. “Elena… what is she talking about? Who is Elizabeth?”

Victoria lifted her tear-streaked, ruined face from the floor. The cruel, calculating matriarch was gone, replaced by a ghost. She stared at the girl she had spent the last two years trying to destroy.

“You are,” Victoria whispered. “My Elizabeth. My daughter.”

The collective gasp from the four hundred guests sounded like a vacuum sucking the air from the room. Flashbulbs suddenly began to go off in the back rows—someone had sneaked a phone out.

“Security!” Julian roared, finally snapping into survival mode. “Clear the room! Everyone out, right now!”

But as the chaos erupted, Elena could only stare at the woman on the floor. The woman who had offered her millions to leave Julian. The woman who had just physically assaulted her at the altar.

Her mother.
