Chapter 12 - The Surgeon of Shadows

The underground clinic smelled of bleach, raw iodine, and stale cigarettes. The harsh fluorescent lights buzzed incessantly, a maddening soundtrack to the agonizing wait.

Victoria had been behind the heavy plastic curtains of Vance’s makeshift operating room for exactly forty-two minutes.

Elena sat on a rusty folding chair, staring blankly at her hands. They were stained crimson. The blood of the woman she had spent her life resenting, mourning, and desperately searching for.

Julian stood near the concrete wall, completely still. He had stripped off his ruined tuxedo shirt and was wearing a plain grey t-shirt Cole had found in a locker. The physical distance between Julian and Elena was palpable—a chasm dug by twenty-three years of lies.

“Julian,” Elena finally whispered, breaking the suffocating silence.

He didn't look at her. He kept his eyes fixed on the plastic curtain. “Don’t.”

“We have to talk about it,” she said, her voice shaking but resolute.

“Talk about what, Elena?” Julian snapped, spinning around. His eyes were red-rimmed, wild with grief and exhaustion. “That the woman I was going to marry today is my sister? That my entire life, my inheritance, my place in this family is built on the bones of your kidnapped childhood?”

Elena stood up, ignoring the ache in her muscles. She walked over to him, stopping just a foot away. “You didn't know. You were a five-year-old orphan when she took you in. You are a victim of Arthur’s games, just like I am.”

Julian let out a hollow, broken laugh. He reached out, his fingers ghosting over the torn edge of her oversized hoodie, right where her wedding dress used to be.

“I loved you,” Julian whispered, a tear finally escaping and tracing down his jawline. “I fought my own mother for you. I was willing to walk away from the Sterling empire for you. And now… I can’t even hold your hand without feeling sick to my stomach.”

Elena felt a tear slide down her own cheek. “I know.”

Julian stepped back, the romantic love dying in his eyes, replaced by something harder. Something forged in the fire of the last three hours.

“You’re the heir, Elena,” Julian said, his voice dropping to a fierce, protective murmur. “Not me. Arthur thinks he’s clearing the board to take the throne. He doesn't realize he just brought the rightful queen back to the castle.”

Before Elena could respond, the plastic curtains ripped open.

Doc Vance stepped out, wiping his hands on a bloody towel. He looked exhausted.

“Is she…?” Elena choked out, the words getting stuck in her throat.

“She’s a stubborn piece of work, I’ll give her that,” Vance grunted, tossing the towel into a biohazard bin. “The bullet missed her liver by a millimeter. I got it out. Stopped the bleeding. She’s stabilized, but she needs a real hospital, antibiotics, and a blood transfusion I can't give her within the next twelve hours, or sepsis will finish what the bullet started.”

Elena exhaled, her knees buckling slightly before Julian caught her arm to steady her.

Cole stepped out from the shadows of the hallway, carrying a thick, ruggedized military laptop under his arm.

“We don't have twelve hours,” Cole said, setting the laptop down on a stainless steel medical tray. He pulled the black USB drive from his pocket. “Arthur’s holding an emergency board meeting at dawn. He’s going to use the 'tragedy' of the wedding to officially declare Victoria incompetent and seize full control of the assets.”

Cole looked at Elena, his eyes drifting to the jade pendant resting against her collarbone.

“It’s time to see what ghosts my mother died to protect,” Cole said. “Give me the code.”
