Chapter 20 - The New Matriarch (Epilogue)

One Year Later.
The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of diamonds, tuxedos, and flashing cameras. But tonight, there were no torn dresses, no screaming matriarchs, and no hidden assassins.
Tonight was the inaugural gala for the Maria Foundation—a billion-dollar philanthropic initiative funded entirely by Sterling Enterprises, dedicated to reforming the foster care system and protecting vulnerable children.
Elena stood on the grand staircase, looking down at the four hundred guests.
She wore an emerald green evening gown that flowed like water, the color perfectly matching the small, imperfect jade pendant that rested against her collarbone. She no longer looked like the scared, overwhelmed girl from a year ago. She radiated power, grace, and an unshakable calm.
“You’re staring,” a low voice murmured near her ear.
Elena smiled, not taking her eyes off the crowd. Cole stood slightly behind her, dressed in a bespoke black tuxedo that fit his broad shoulders perfectly. The earpiece coiled behind his ear marked him as her head of security, but the way he stood just a little too close, the way his hand hovered protectively near the small of her back, spoke of something much deeper.
“I’m just taking it in,” Elena whispered back.
Down in the crowd, Julian was working the room flawlessly. He was laughing with a group of senators, entirely in his element as the CEO of the newly reformed, unassailable Sterling Enterprises. When he caught Elena’s eye, he raised his champagne flute in a silent, affectionate toast.
Beside Julian sat Victoria.
The matriarch was in a wheelchair, her health still frail, but her eyes were bright and full of life. She wore a stunning silver gown, holding court with a group of board members. She looked up at the staircase, her eyes locking onto Elena’s.
Victoria didn't smile—she was still Victoria Sterling, after all—but she gave a slow, deep nod of absolute respect and profound love.
“Time to give your speech, Chairwoman,” Cole murmured, stepping back to give her space.

Elena took a deep breath. She touched the jade pendant one last time, honoring the lost girl who had worn it, the nanny who had hidden it, and the mother who had recognized it.
She walked down the stairs, stepping into the blinding light of the flashbulbs, ready to lead the empire that was always hers to claim.
