Chapter 8 - The Dead Man's Switch

Ten minutes later, Elena emerged from the back of the container wearing an oversized black hoodie and faded jeans. The shredded wedding dress was stuffed into a trash bag in the corner—a physical manifestation of a life that no longer existed.
Cole had spread a series of blueprints and a battered laptop across a metal folding table. Julian was leaning over it, his corporate instincts taking over.
“My mother didn't just run,” Cole was explaining, tapping a key on the laptop. “She was smart. She knew Arthur would eventually tie up loose ends. So before she fled town twenty-three years ago, she stole something from his office safe. Insurance.”
“What kind of insurance?” Julian asked, his eyes scanning the screen.
Cole pulled a small, black USB drive from a chain around his neck. “A digital ledger. Back then it was on floppy disks, I transferred it. It contains every single illegal transaction Arthur made between 1998 and 2003. Embezzlement, bribery of police officials, and the exact wire transfers he used to pay off the fixers who were supposed to kill Elena.”
Victoria gasped, stepping closer to the table. “If we have this… this is a silver bullet. We can take this to the FBI. It proves Arthur orchestrated the kidnapping and stole company funds.”
“It’s encrypted,” Cole said grimly. “Military-grade encryption. My mom hid the decryption key, and Arthur’s men burned down our house before she could tell me where it was. Without the key, this drive is just a piece of plastic.”
Julian crossed his arms, staring at the screen. “Arthur was old-school. He didn’t trust technology. If he had an encryption key back in the early 2000s, it wasn’t a string of random numbers. It would have been a physical object or a phrase. Something he could remember.”
“My mom left me a voicemail right before they broke into the house,” Cole said, pulling out his phone. He played the audio.
A frantic, breathless woman’s voice filled the container. “Cole, they’re here. I don't have much time. The key to the Sterling files… it’s where the green meets the gold. The girl has it. Find the girl.”
The audio cut to static, followed by the terrifying sound of a door being kicked in before the line went dead.
Silence hung in the room.
“The girl has it,” Julian repeated. He turned slowly to look at Elena. “Elena… what does you have that connects green and gold?”
Elena’s brow furrowed. She looked down at her hands, then her chest. Her breath hitched. She reached under the collar of her oversized hoodie and pulled out the jade pendant. The dark green stone rested against the gold chain.
“The pendant,” Victoria breathed, her eyes widening. “The crest on the back. It’s green jade, set in a gold rim.”
Cole grabbed a magnifying glass from his bag and walked over to Elena. “Let me see it.”
Elena held it out. Cole squinted through the glass, examining the microscopic etching of the intertwined 'V' and 'E'.
“It’s not just a crest,” Cole said, a slow, triumphant smile spreading across his face. “Look at the lines of the letters. They’re uneven. It’s a micro-engraved alphanumeric code. This is the decryption key.”
Julian let out a breathless laugh. “Arthur gave Maria the pendant to sell for cash so she could escape. He didn't realize the jeweler had engraved his custom security code into the back of it.”

“We have him,” Victoria said, a terrifying, vengeful fire returning to her eyes. The weeping mother was gone; the CEO was back. “We have everything we need to destroy him.”
But just as a glimmer of hope sparked in the room, Julian’s smartwatch buzzed violently on his wrist.
