Chapter 16 - The Fall of the King

The silence in the penthouse boardroom was deafening. The only sound was the faint, rhythmic ticking of Arthur’s gold Rolex.

Arthur stared at the black USB drive resting on the mahogany table as if it were a live grenade. The color had completely drained from his face, leaving his skin a sickly, ashen gray. He looked up at the three men from the Volkov Syndicate.

“It’s a trick,” Arthur stammered, his voice cracking, stripping away decades of cultivated intimidation. “Viktor, you know me. We’ve done business for twenty years. This girl is a fraud. She’s trying to stall the merger!”

Viktor, the lead syndicate representative, slowly buttoned his tailored suit jacket. His cold, dead eyes shifted from Arthur to Elena, taking in the severe black suit, the unwavering posture, and the heavy gold signet ring on her finger. He was a man who survived by reading the room, and he knew when a ship was sinking.

“We do not do business with dead men, Arthur,” Viktor said, his heavy Russian accent cutting through the tension like a blade. “And it appears your execution has just been ordered.”

Viktor nodded to his two associates. Without another word, the three massive men turned and walked toward the private executive elevator. They didn't run; they simply vanished, erasing their connection to Arthur Sterling before the fallout could touch them.

“Viktor, wait!” Arthur shouted, his desperation echoing off the glass walls. But the elevator doors slid shut.

Arthur was entirely alone.

The remaining board members, realizing they were sitting next to a man about to be indicted for kidnapping and embezzlement, scrambled out of their chairs, backing away toward the walls.

Arthur turned back to Elena, his eyes wide and manic. The polished, aristocratic facade shattered, revealing the pathetic, cornered animal underneath.

“You think you’ve won?” Arthur snarled, spittle flying from his lips. He lunged across the table, his hands grasping for Elena’s throat. “I built this empire! I won't let some street trash take it from me!”

He never made it halfway.

Cole moved with terrifying speed, vaulting onto the edge of the mahogany table and kicking Arthur squarely in the chest. The older man flew backward, crashing into a row of ergonomic leather chairs with a sickening thud. Before Arthur could recover, Julian was on him.

Julian grabbed his uncle by the lapels of his $5,000 suit, hauling him to his feet and slamming him brutally against the floor-to-ceiling glass window. Down below, the city was waking up, oblivious to the transfer of power happening in the clouds.

“You stole her life,” Julian roared, his voice thick with twenty-three years of misplaced grief. “You tried to kill my mother. You are going to spend the rest of your miserable life rotting in a concrete box, and I am going to personally ensure you don't have a dime left to your name.”

Arthur gasped for air, blood trickling from his lip, staring at the drop below.

Suddenly, the wail of sirens pierced the dawn.

Elena walked slowly toward the window, looking down. Five black SUVs with flashing red and blue lights were swarming the plaza below.

“I didn't just set a dead-man’s switch for the files, Arthur,” Elena said coldly, standing next to Julian. “Cole sent a copy of the ledger to the FBI Director ten minutes ago. We didn't need to negotiate. We just needed to keep you in this room until they arrived.”

The elevator pinged. A dozen heavily armed federal agents poured into the boardroom.

Arthur Sterling sank to his knees, his hands trembling as the cuffs ratcheted tightly around his wrists. He looked up at Elena one last time.

She didn't gloat. She didn't smile. She simply turned her back on him, walking away as the federal agents dragged the ruin of a king to the elevators.
