Chapter 7 - Ashes of a Bride

The inside of the shipping container was retrofitted with the bare minimum: a sputtering generator, a few military cots, and a makeshift kitchenette lit by a single, flickering fluorescent bulb. It was a stark, jarring contrast to the five-star luxury they had inhabited just an hour ago.

Elena stood in the center of the cramped space, shivering in her shredded designer gown. The reality of the situation was crashing down on her in suffocating waves. Her wedding day. Her adopted husband-to-be. Her biological mother. A hitman.

It was too much. Her knees gave out, and she sank to the cold metal floor, pulling her knees to her chest. She didn't cry. She was too empty to cry.

Julian was at her side in an instant. He knelt, taking off his tuxedo jacket and wrapping it securely around her shoulders. “I’ve got you,” he whispered fiercely. “I’m here, Elena. I’m not going anywhere.”

Elena looked up into his eyes—the warm, hazel eyes she had fallen in love with. But looking at him now, a deep, agonizing ache bloomed in her chest.

“Julian… we can’t,” she choked out. “We’re… we’re legally siblings. You’re her son. I’m her daughter. The media, the world… it’s over. Our life together is over.”

Julian’s face crumpled, the truth of her words hitting him like a physical blow. He had loved her with every fiber of his being, fought his own mother to marry her, only to find out their love story was a cosmic, cruel joke orchestrated by fate. He reached out, his hand hovering over her cheek before slowly pulling it back. The boundary between them had irrevocably shifted.

“I don't care about the media,” Julian said, his voice breaking. “I don't care about the optics. You are the most important person in my world, Elena. Romantic or not… I will die before I let Arthur touch you.”

From the corner of the room, Victoria watched them. The mighty matriarch of the Sterling empire looked small, her pristine updo ruined, her expensive silk suit stained with dirt and grease from the car. She wrapped her arms around herself, watching the man she raised comfort the daughter she had lost.

“Elizabeth,” Victoria said softly.

Elena flinched. “Don’t call me that.”

Victoria took a slow, agonizing step forward. “I know you hate me. You have every right to. I was… I was cruel to you. I thought you were a grifter trying to steal my son’s fortune. I was trying to protect him. I was trying to protect the family.”

“You didn’t care about protecting Julian,” Elena said bitterly, standing up to face the woman. “You cared about control. You couldn't stand that Julian chose someone who didn't come from money. You humiliated me today, Victoria. You tore the dress off my body in front of hundreds of people to break me.”

“And it broke me instead,” Victoria whispered, tears finally spilling over her mascara-stained cheeks. She fell to her knees, right there on the dirty metal floor, bowing her head. “I am so sorry. I am so, so sorry. If I could take it back, I would give away every cent I own. I have spent twenty-three years looking at the river, wondering if my baby girl was cold. And you were right in front of me.”

Elena stared at the weeping billionaire at her feet. For years, Elena had dreamed of her biological mother. She had imagined a warm, loving woman baking cookies and kissing her forehead. Not this ruthless, terrifying CEO. But seeing Victoria broken, kneeling in the dirt, Elena saw the undeniable truth: Victoria's cruelty was born of a shattered, unhealed heart.

Cole tossed a bundle of dark clothing onto the cot next to Elena.

“Touching reunion,” Cole interrupted, his voice sharp. “But you need to get out of that dress, princess. You’re a walking target in white lace. Change. We have work to do.”
