Chapter 13 - Sins of the Father

They gathered around the glowing screen of the laptop. The clinic’s buzzing lights seemed to dim as the encrypted prompt flashed on the screen: ENTER DECRYPTION KEY.

Elena pulled the jade pendant off her neck. She handed it to Cole, who clicked on a small jeweler's magnifying flashlight.

“Alright, let’s read the micro-engraving,” Cole muttered, squinting through the glass. “The lines of the 'V' and 'E' are made of tiny letters and numbers. Okay… first string: A-R-T-H-U-R…”

Julian scoffed bitterly. “Of course he used his own name. The narcissism is staggering.”

“Wait, there’s more,” Cole said, typing rapidly. “A-R-T-H-U-R-0-4-0-9-1-9-9-8.”

Elena’s blood ran cold. “April 9th, 1998.”

Julian looked at her. “What is that date?”

“The day I went missing,” Elena whispered.

Cole hit the ENTER key.

The screen froze for a tortuous three seconds. A small loading bar appeared, turned green, and the screen exploded with thousands of files, spreadsheets, and scanned documents.

Julian leaned in, his eyes darting across the ledgers. The corporate prodigy within him instantly began digesting the raw data. After ten seconds, the color drained entirely from his face.

“Oh, my God,” Julian breathed. “It’s not just embezzlement.”

“What is it?” Elena asked, stepping closer.

“Arthur isn’t trying to take over Sterling Enterprises to run it,” Julian said, clicking furiously through a folder labeled PROJECT ICARUS. “He’s millions of dollars in debt to the Volkov Syndicate. Russian organized crime. He’s been bleeding the company dry for decades to pay off gambling debts and bad investments, but the well ran dry.”

Cole cursed under his breath. “So what’s the board meeting tomorrow for?”

“Liquidation,” Julian said, pointing to a scanned contract on the screen. “If he gets control of the board at 6:00 AM, he’s going to sign a merger agreement that completely dissolves Sterling Enterprises. He’s selling off the assets, the patents, the real estate, and the pensions of eighty thousand employees to a shell company owned by the syndicate. By noon tomorrow, the Sterling legacy will cease to exist, and Arthur will walk away with a clean slate.”

Elena stared at the screen. Her mother had bled for this company. She had sacrificed her soul, her family, and nearly her life for it. Arthur was going to burn it all to the ground while Victoria lay unconscious on a bloody cot.

“Can we send this to the FBI?” Cole asked.

“By the time they process it and get a warrant, it’ll be too late,” Julian said grimly. “Once the ink dries on that contract, the shell companies scatter the assets globally. It’s untraceable.”

“Then we don't send it to the FBI,” a weak, raspy voice echoed from the doorway.

They all whipped around.

Victoria was leaning heavily against the doorframe of the operating room. She was pale as a sheet, wearing a hospital gown stained with iodine, clutching an IV pole with trembling hands.

“Mom, what are you doing?” Julian rushed forward, but Victoria held up a shaking hand to stop him.

Her eyes bypassed Julian and locked directly onto Elena. The fierce, terrifying matriarch had returned, burning through the pain.

“Arthur thinks he’s playing a game of chess,” Victoria gasped, each breath a struggle. “He thinks he took my queen. He doesn’t know the pawn is a queen in disguise.”

Victoria reached to her neck and pulled off a heavy, gold signet ring from a chain. She held it out to Elena.

“Take it,” Victoria commanded.

Elena slowly walked over and took the ring. It was heavy, engraved with the Sterling family crest.

“That ring bypasses the biometric locks on the executive elevator,” Victoria breathed, her legs threatening to give out. “In my office vault is the original charter of the company. It clearly states that in the event of my incapacitation, majority control automatically falls to my biological heir. Not a proxy. Not an adopted son. Blood.”

Victoria looked at Elena, her eyes blazing with an unholy fire.

“You march into that boardroom, Elizabeth,” Victoria hissed. “You take back what he stole from you. And you burn Arthur to the ground.”
