Over the next week, Seraphina watched the ghost of the criminal underworld operate.
She saw men in expensive suits leave Ronan's study trembling. She saw briefcases full of cash and weapons. Yet, whenever Ronan stepped into the same room as her, the monster vanished. He was quiet, measured, and strangely gentle.
"You look at me like you're trying to solve a puzzle," Ronan said one evening by the fireplace.

"I'm trying to understand how a man who makes others bleed can make sure I never do," she replied honestly.
Ronan poured two glasses of bourbon, sliding one across the mahogany table toward her. "The world is full of wolves, Seraphina. Some wolves kill for sport. Others kill to protect the pack." He met her gaze. "You're pack now."
