Seraphina stood behind the glass as Ronan approached Marcus. She couldn't hear the words, but she saw the body language.
Marcus puffed out his chest, pointing a finger at Ronan’s face. Ronan didn't flinch. He didn't yell. He simply reached into his inside pocket, pulled out a thick manila envelope, and handed it to the detective.
Marcus opened it. Seraphina watched as the color completely drained from her abuser's face. His knees buckled slightly. Ronan leaned in, whispering something in Marcus's ear.
Marcus dropped his badge on the wet pavement, turned around, and ran.

Ronan walked back into the greenhouse, his shoes silent against the stone floor. "He is no longer a detective. His corrupt accounts have been drained, and he is currently fleeing the state. If he stops running, my men will find him."
Seraphina fell into Ronan's arms, sobbing not from fear, but from absolute relief. He held her tight.
