The fear was gone, but anger replaced it. Seraphina realized she had spent years cowering. She never wanted to rely entirely on someone else again, not even Ronan.
"Teach me," she demanded the next evening, stepping into his private basement shooting range.
Ronan looked at her, raising an eyebrow. "Teach you what?"
"How to hold a gun. How to stop my hands from shaking. How to be like you."

A dangerous, approving smile played on Ronan's lips. He picked up a matte-black Glock 19, cleared the chamber, and handed it to her. "Rule number one, Seraphina. You never pull a weapon unless you are absolutely prepared to end a life. Are you?"
She looked at the heavy steel in her hands, then at him. "Yes."
