Chapter 1 - THE SHATTERED SILENCE

Ethan Caldwell stood completely frozen in the grand doorway of the east parlor.
His tailored charcoal suit suddenly felt too tight against his chest as his lungs forgot how to draw in air.
The afternoon sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting long, sharp shadows across the marble floor.
In the center of the room, his fiancée, Victoria Sterling, stood with her hands on her hips, her designer heels clicking impatiently against the stone.
Her beautiful face was twisted into an ugly mask of pure disdain.
"I told the staff to keep their filthy brats out of the main house," Victoria snapped, crossing her arms over her silk blouse.
"She was putting her sticky little hands all over your mother's Steinway, Ethan."
Victoria let out a harsh, unsympathetic laugh that echoed off the high vaulted ceiling.
"Honestly, you need to fire whoever let this little rat wander in here."
But Ethan did not hear a single word she said.
The blood was roaring in his ears like a violent ocean storm.
His piercing gray eyes were locked onto the tiny figure crumpled on the cold marble floor.
It was Lily.
She was clutching her stuffed rabbit, Button, so tightly against her small chest that her knuckles were turning white.
Tears were streaming down her soft, round cheeks, leaving shiny trails in the sunlight.
A small scrape on her elbow was beginning to bead with crimson blood from where she had hit the hard floor.
She looked up, terrified, her bottom lip trembling as she tried to hold back her sobs.
And when Ethan looked into those terrified eyes, the ground beneath his feet seemed to vanish.
They were his eyes.
The exact same stormy, unmistakable shade of silver-gray that had stared back at him in the mirror for thirty-two years.
The same eyes that his late mother had passed down to him.
He felt a sudden, violent jolt in his chest, a realization so profound and heavy that it knocked the breath completely out of him.
Before his rational mind could process what was happening, his body was already moving.
He bypassed Victoria completely, not even sparing her a passing glance.
"Ethan?" Victoria called out, her voice dripping with sudden confusion.
"Ethan, what are you doing, don't touch her, you'll ruin your suit."
He dropped to his knees on the hard marble, the expensive fabric of his trousers pulling tightly.
He didn't care about the suit, the marble, or the woman demanding his attention.
He reached out with trembling hands, his large, powerful fingers gently brushing the dark curls away from Lily's tear-stained face.
"Are you okay, sweetheart?" he whispered, his voice cracking with an emotion he hadn't felt in years.
Lily sniffled, looking up at the giant of a man who was usually so stern and distant.
She nodded slowly, instinctively leaning into the warmth of his large palm.
Suddenly, frantic footsteps echoed down the long hallway, slipping against the polished stone.
Rosa Martinez burst into the east parlor, her maid's uniform slightly wrinkled, her dark eyes wide with absolute panic.
She took one look at the scene—Victoria's fury, Lily on the floor, and Ethan kneeling beside her—and all the color drained from her face.
"Lily!" Rosa gasped, rushing forward and dropping to her knees right across from Ethan.
She reached for her daughter, pulling the little girl into a desperate, protective embrace.
"I am so sorry, Mr. Caldwell," Rosa babbled, her voice shaking violently as she kept her eyes glued to the floor.
"I turned my back for one second in the kitchen, and she slipped away."
She kissed the top of Lily's head, her own tears threatening to spill over.
"It will never happen again, I swear to you, please don't let us go."
Ethan looked at Rosa, really looked at her, for the first time since she had started working here two years ago.
He saw the familiar curve of her jaw, the dark, familiar hair, and the shadows of a memory he had buried deep in his soul.
Four years ago, during a massive blackout in the city, before the billions, before the empire, he had spent one unforgettable night with a woman he met in the lobby of a dark hotel.
May you like
A woman who vanished before the morning light ever touched the sky.
He stared at Rosa, then down at the little girl in her arms, and the puzzle pieces violently snapped into place.
