Chapter 19 - THE CALDWELL SHIELD

The dingy, smoke-filled bar in the darkest corner of Brooklyn smelled strongly of stale beer and quiet desperation.

Hector Ramirez sat alone in a torn leather booth, nursing a cheap drink and grinning as he thought about the massive payday heading his way.

He assumed the rich little maid would be completely terrified of a scandal and would quietly wire the money by midnight.

He was violently pulled from his greedy fantasies when the heavy front doors of the bar swung open, letting in a massive gust of freezing wind.

The loud, obnoxious music playing from the jukebox abruptly cut off.

Hector looked up, the cheap glass slipping entirely from his greasy fingers and shattering loudly on the dirty floor.

Ethan Caldwell walked slowly into the bar, flanked by four massive, heavily armed security guards who immediately locked the front doors behind them.

Ethan wore a long, expensive black wool coat, looking like a terrifying grim reaper completely out of place in the rundown establishment.

But what truly terrified Hector was the woman walking confidently right beside the ruthless billionaire.

Rosa wore a beautiful, tailored winter coat, her head held incredibly high, and her dark eyes flashing with absolute, fierce defiance.

Ethan smoothly pulled out a chair opposite Hector’s booth, gently gesturing for his wife to sit down, before taking the seat directly next to her.

"Hector Ramirez, I presume," Ethan said smoothly, his voice lethally quiet and echoing slightly in the suddenly silent bar.

"I... I didn't think you would actually come here," Hector stammered pathetically, pressing his back hard against the booth as if trying to merge with the wall.

Rosa leaned forward, placing the crumpled extortion letter perfectly flat on the sticky wooden table.

"You made a very massive mistake, Hector," Rosa said, her voice completely steady and entirely devoid of any fear.

"You assumed that because I used to be poor, I would still be easy to intimidate."

Hector swallowed hard, his eyes darting frantically toward the massive security guards blocking every single exit.

"It was just a joke, Rosa, a big misunderstanding," Hector choked out, sweating profusely despite the freezing draft in the room.

"Do not ever speak my wife's first name again," Ethan interrupted, his silver eyes flashing with such murderous intent that Hector actually whimpered.

"My wife wanted to handle this politely, so I am going to give you exactly one warning before I absolutely destroy your entire pathetic existence."

Ethan leaned across the dirty table, bringing his face dangerously close to the trembling slumlord.

"If you ever breathe in the general direction of my family again, I will personally ensure you spend the rest of your miserable life rotting in a federal penitentiary."

"I have enough money and lawyers to bury you so deeply that daylight will become a forgotten memory."

Hector nodded violently, tears of sheer, pathetic terror pooling in his bloodshot eyes.

"I swear, I will never bother you again, please just let me go," Hector begged, keeping his hands raised in surrender.

Rosa looked at the man who had once been the terrifying monster of her nightmares, and she felt absolutely nothing but cold, empty pity.

"Let's go home, Ethan," Rosa said softly, standing up from the sticky table and turning her back on the broken man.

May you like

Ethan smiled a dark, satisfied smile, offering his arm to his fierce, incredible wife.

They walked out of the bar together, stepping back into the beautiful, falling snow, completely untouchable.
