Chapter 9 - THE MEANING OF FAMILY

The enormous formal dining room of the Caldwell estate had always been a cold, lonely place for Ethan.

He usually ate his meals in silence, reading financial reports while the staff served him perfectly plated, tasteless food.

But tonight, the atmosphere in the room was entirely transformed.

Laughter echoed off the high, vaulted ceilings, replacing the heavy silence that had haunted the mansion for years.

Lily was sitting in a high chair that Ethan had personally ordered to be delivered that very afternoon.

She was currently covered in tomato sauce, happily mashing a piece of garlic bread into her wooden bowl of spaghetti.

Rosa sat across from Ethan, wearing a soft pink sweater, her dark hair pulled up into a messy, beautiful bun.

She was laughing so hard that tears were forming in the corners of her eyes.

"Lily, please don't feed the dog spaghetti," Rosa gasped, pointing to the massive Golden Retriever that Ethan had also surprisingly purchased that morning.

The dog, whom Lily had immediately named 'Noodles', happily licked the red sauce right off the expensive Persian rug.

Ethan watched the chaotic scene unfold with a soft, genuine smile playing on his lips.

He had never experienced anything like this in his entire life.

His own childhood had been dark, filled with poverty, cold nights, and a desperate struggle to simply survive.

He had sworn to himself that his children would never know that kind of deep, aching hunger.

But he had never factored in the joy.

Lily suddenly stopped playing with her food and looked directly at Ethan, her big gray eyes blinking innocently.

"Are you my daddy?" she asked loudly, the question cutting through the laughter like a ringing bell.

The room went completely still, save for the sound of Noodles happily chewing on the garlic bread.

Rosa froze, her fork hovering halfway to her mouth, her eyes darting nervously toward Ethan.

They had not formally discussed how to explain this complicated situation to a three-year-old child.

Ethan felt a sudden, massive lump form in the back of his throat, completely stealing his ability to speak.

He slowly put his napkin down on the table and stood up, walking carefully around the long edge toward Lily.

He knelt down beside her high chair, not caring at all about the sticky tomato sauce covering her little hands.

"Yes, sweetheart," Ethan whispered, his voice cracking with heavy, raw emotion.

"I am your daddy."

Lily stared at him for a long moment, processing this massive piece of information with the serious logic only a toddler possessed.

Then, she reached out with her sauce-covered fingers and patted him directly on the cheek.

"Okay," she declared simply, before turning back to her bowl of spaghetti as if she hadn't just healed his entire soul.

Ethan let out a wet, shaky laugh, closing his eyes as a tear finally escaped and rolled down his face.

May you like

Rosa watched them, her heart breaking and healing all at the exact same time.

For the first time since she had met the terrifying billionaire, she realized she was falling hopelessly in love with him.
