Chapter 14 - THE MASTERPIECE

The heavy wooden doors of the Caldwell estate closed silently behind them, shutting out the cool midnight air of the city.

The massive house was quiet and peaceful, the only sound being the soft ticking of the grand father clock in the hallway.

Lily was already fast asleep upstairs, safely guarded by the night nanny and a heavily armed security detail.

Rosa slipped off her expensive high heels with a relieved sigh, carrying them in her hand as they walked into the dimly lit east parlor.

Moonlight spilled beautifully across the polished marble floor, illuminating the magnificent black concert grand piano sitting in the center of the room.

Ethan walked slowly over to the piano, tracing his long fingers over the smooth, closed lid.

"I used to hate this room," Ethan admitted softly, his voice echoing quietly in the large space.

"It felt like a giant tomb, a place where all the joy in my life had died along with my mother."

Rosa walked up behind him, gently placing her hand on his broad shoulder in a gesture of silent support.

"But then you and Lily came crashing into my perfectly organized, empty world," he continued, turning around to face her.

"You brought the music back into this house, Rosa."

He reached into the inner pocket of his tuxedo jacket and pulled out a small, dark velvet box.

Rosa gasped quietly, her heart instantly slamming fiercely against her ribcage.

Ethan slowly dropped down onto one knee, looking up at her with an expression of such pure, raw vulnerability that it took her breath away.

"I spent years building an empire, accumulating billions of dollars, thinking it would finally make me feel whole," Ethan said, his voice thick with emotion.

"But the absolute greatest treasure I have ever found was a beautiful, terrified woman in a dark hotel lobby four years ago."

He popped the velvet box open, revealing a breathtaking ring.

It was not a massive, gaudy diamond meant to show off wealth like the one he had given Victoria.

It was a stunning, flawless sapphire surrounded by delicate, vintage diamonds, heavily resembling a beautiful blue butterfly.

"I don't want to spend another single day of my life without you by my side," Ethan whispered, his silver eyes shining with unshed tears.

"Rosa Martinez, will you do me the absolute honor of marrying me and letting me love you for the rest of my days?"

Tears streamed freely down Rosa’s cheeks as she covered her mouth with her trembling hands.

All the pain, the struggle, the lonely nights wondering how she would feed her child, simply washed away in the moonlight.

"Yes," Rosa sobbed, nodding her head vigorously.

"Yes, Ethan, a million times yes."

Ethan let out a shaky breath of profound relief, gently sliding the beautiful sapphire ring onto her finger.

He stood up and pulled her into a deeply passionate, desperate kiss, pouring all of his soul into the woman who had finally saved him.
