Chapter 18 - GHOSTS FROM THE DARKNESS

The winter months brought a beautiful, thick blanket of sparkling snow to the sprawling grounds of the Caldwell estate.

Life had settled into a wonderful, busy rhythm for the family.

Rosa spent her days managing the massive, rapid expansion of her charitable foundation, while Ethan continued to ruthlessly dominate the global financial markets.

But extreme wealth and highly publicized happiness always attract the absolute worst kinds of desperate scavengers.

It happened on a quiet Tuesday morning while Ethan was downtown attending an emergency board meeting.

Rosa was sitting in her private study, reviewing architectural blueprints for a new women's shelter, when the head of estate security knocked firmly on her door.

"Come in," Rosa called out, not looking up from her complicated paperwork.

Marcus stepped into the room, his jaw tightly clenched, holding a thick, slightly wrinkled manila envelope.

"Mrs. Caldwell, this was just intercepted at the secondary security gate by one of our mail screeners," Marcus reported, his voice strictly professional but laced with clear concern.

Rosa frowned, finally looking up and setting her expensive pen down on the mahogany desk.

"What is it, Marcus?" she asked, sensing the heavy tension radiating from the experienced security chief.

"It is a letter addressed directly to you, and the sender claims to be a man named Hector Ramirez," Marcus explained, handing the envelope across the desk.

All the blood instantly drained from Rosa’s face, leaving her completely pale and trembling.

Hector Ramirez was the abusive, slumlord owner of the broken-down apartment building she had lived in when she was heavily pregnant with Lily.

He was the man who had mercilessly thrown her out into the freezing rain because she was exactly two days late on her rent.

Rosa opened the envelope with violently shaking fingers, pulling out a single, handwritten piece of notebook paper.

The letter was cruel, heavily misspelled, and violently demanding.

Hector claimed that since she was now married to a billionaire, she owed him millions of dollars for the "damages" she supposedly left in his disgusting apartment.

He threatened to go to the tabloid press and lie, telling them she was a drug addict who used to steal from her neighbors, unless she paid him two million dollars in untraceable cash.

"He wants to destroy my reputation," Rosa whispered, a sudden wave of panic threatening to pull her back into the terrified, helpless girl she used to be.

"Mrs. Caldwell, I can have a team dispatched to his current location within ten minutes," Marcus stated, crossing his arms over his chest.

"We can make sure this man never sends a letter to this property ever again."

Rosa stared blindly at the threatening letter, feeling the familiar, suffocating weight of fear pressing heavily against her chest.

But then, she remembered who she was now.

She was not a helpless, starving student begging for a few extra days to pay her rent.

She was Rosa Caldwell, a woman who controlled a fifty-million-dollar charity and possessed the unwavering love of the most powerful man in New York.

"No, Marcus, do not send the team," Rosa commanded, her voice suddenly turning dangerously cold and steady.

"When my husband gets home this evening, we are going to handle Hector Ramirez personally."
