Chapter 11 - The Maid’s GambitThe heavy steel door of the vault hissed, the hydraulic pressure releasing as Valeria punched in the override sequence.

Red emergency lights spun in the corridor outside, painting the concrete walls in flashes of blood-red and absolute black. Valeria’s hands gripped the cold polymer frame of the 9mm Glock. It felt unnaturally heavy. It was a machine designed for one singular purpose: to end human life.

Just weeks ago, her biggest fear was spilling bleach on a Persian rug. Now, she was stepping out of a bomb-proof bunker to hunt a cartel executioner.

"Stay under the bed, Mateo," Valeria whispered fiercely, her eyes never leaving the crack in the opening door. "Do not make a sound until I come back for you."

She slipped through the gap before the door fully opened, instantly hitting the exterior override button to slam it shut behind her. The locking mechanism engaged with a heavy CLACK. Mateo was safe. Now, she was completely alone.

Valeria didn't take the main staircase. She knew El Verdugo would have his men waiting at the top with their weapons aimed at the landing. If she walked up those steps, she would be cut to pieces in seconds.

Instead, she moved toward the maintenance corridor.

During her second week at the compound, Alejandro had given her a full tour of the security measures, explaining the estate’s layout with military precision. He had shown her the ventilation shafts and the hidden service tunnels used by the engineering staff to maintain the compound's massive generators.

She opened a heavy, unmarked gray door and slipped into the pitch-black tunnel.

The air was thick with the smell of diesel and sulfur. Valeria moved slowly, letting her eyes adjust to the darkness. Above her, the muffled shouts of the Sombras sicarios echoed through the floorboards.

She crept up the metal service ladder, her breath hitching every time her boots scraped against the iron rungs.

When she reached the top grate, she peered through the narrow slats. She was directly beneath the main living area, just a few yards from the shattered glass doors of the courtyard.

She pushed the grate open just enough to see.

The sight made her stomach violently churn.

The pristine white marble of the compound was stained crimson. Several of Alejandro’s elite guards lay dead on the floor.

And in the center of the room, surrounded by ten heavily armed men wearing tactical masks, was Alejandro.

He was on his knees. His designer shirt was torn, soaked in blood from a deep gash on his forehead and a gunshot wound to his left shoulder. His hands were zip-tied behind his back.

Standing in front of him was a massive man with a scarred face, smoking a thin cigar. El Verdugo. The Executioner.

"Two minutes are up, Ríos," El Verdugo sneered, checking a gold watch on his wrist. "Your little maid didn't come. She abandoned you. And honestly? I don't blame her."

Alejandro slowly lifted his head. Despite being on his knees, bleeding and bound, he looked at El Verdugo with the terrifying, arrogant smirk of a king looking at a peasant.

"She is smarter than you," Alejandro rasped, spitting a mouthful of blood onto El Verdugo’s expensive leather boots. "She knows you're a dead man talking."

El Verdugo’s eyes flashed with rage. He drew a silver-plated Desert Eagle from his holster and pressed the massive barrel directly against Alejandro’s temple.

"The offshore codes. Now. Or I paint this floor with your brains and blow the vault myself."

Valeria’s heart stopped.

She was out of time.

She pushed the iron grate all the way open, silently pulling herself out of the tunnel and behind the heavy oak bar in the corner of the room. She was fifteen feet away from them.

She raised the Glock. Her hands were shaking so violently she could barely line up the sights. She had never fired a gun. She didn't know about recoil or windage.

But she knew she couldn't let Alejandro die.

Taking a deep, shuddering breath, Valeria aimed at the center of the largest man standing to El Verdugo's right.

She squeezed the trigger.
