Chapter 9 - The Shadows StrikeThe blast shattered the reinforced glass doors of the balcony, sending shards raining into the suite.

Alejandro tackled Valeria to the stone floor, his large body covering hers completely as the shockwave washed over them. The deafening roar of the explosion was immediately followed by the blaring wail of the compound’s emergency sirens.
"Mateo!" Valeria screamed, struggling against Alejandro's weight.
"Stay down!" Alejandro roared, pulling his weapon.
Gunfire erupted from the courtyard below—the heavy, rhythmic thumping of assault rifles echoing off the mountain walls. Red warning lights flooded the suite, casting everything in a sinister, bloody glow.
Alejandro hauled Valeria to her feet and dragged her inside. They sprinted toward the adjoining bedroom.
Mateo was sitting up in bed, his hands covering his ears, his eyes wide with returning terror.
Valeria scooped him into her arms without hesitation. "I've got you, baby. I've got you."
Alejandro’s radio cracked violently. "Patrón! We have a massive breach at the south gate! It’s Los Sombras. They used heavy artillery to blow the main wall. We have at least forty hostiles pushing the courtyard!"
"Hold the line, Hector!" Alejandro barked into his radio, his face a mask of lethal fury. "Protect the inner sanctum. I'm moving the package to the vault."
Alejandro turned to Valeria. "Listen to me," he said, grabbing her face with his free hand. His thumb pressed against her cheekbone, his eyes fiercely locked onto hers. "Do exactly as I say, and you both live. Do you understand?"
Valeria nodded, her heart hammering in her throat.
"Follow me."
They ran down the hallway. The mountain compound was a labyrinth, but Alejandro moved with absolute certainty. They descended a hidden staircase behind a bookshelf in his office, spiraling deep into the bedrock of the mountain.
Above them, the sounds of war raged. Explosions rattled the dust from the stone walls. Men screamed. The cartel war had come to their doorstep.
They reached a massive, steel bank-vault door at the bottom of the stairs. Alejandro punched a code into the keypad, and the heavy door hissed open.
"Get inside," Alejandro ordered, pushing Valeria and Mateo into the brightly lit, heavily stocked bunker.
"You're coming with us, right?" Valeria asked, holding the door open with one hand. Panic laced her voice. She didn't want him to leave. She realized, with terrifying clarity, that she didn't want to lose him.
Alejandro looked at her. For a split second, the cartel boss vanished, and all that remained was a man looking at the two people he cherished most in the world.
He reached out, his hand cupping the back of Valeria’s neck. Before she could process what was happening, he pulled her in and crashed his lips against hers.
The kiss was desperate, bruising, and tasted of adrenaline and danger. It knocked the breath out of Valeria's lungs, but she kissed him back, her free hand gripping the lapel of his shirt.
Alejandro pulled away, his forehead resting against hers.
"Lock the door, Valeria," he whispered harshly. "Do not open it for anyone but me."

He stepped back and hit the exterior button. The heavy steel door began to slide shut.
Valeria watched his face disappear behind inches of steel. The final clack of the locking mechanism sealed her and Mateo in absolute silence, leaving the man she was falling in love with to face an army alone.
