Chapter 2 - Dust and Shadows"Mateo, no," Valeria whispered, her voice trembling as she tried to gently pull her hand away. "We can't go there. Your father..."

Mateo’s grip tightened. For a four-year-old, his strength was terrifying, fueled by a desperate, silent urgency. He looked at the heavy oak door leading to the main hallway, then back to Valeria. He didn't scream. He didn't bite. But the panic rising in his chest was visible. His breathing hitched, his eyes widening in that familiar, frantic way that usually preceded his violent outbursts.

"Okay," Valeria breathed out quickly, dropping to her knees to soothe him. "Okay, Mateo. Shh. I’m with you. I won't leave you."

She had made a promise to this broken child, and she wasn't going to break it on her first night.

Slipping on a pair of soft-soled slippers, Valeria took Mateo's hand. The hallways of the Ríos estate were a labyrinth of marble, priceless art, and armed security. But Mateo moved with the silent, practiced precision of a ghost. He knew the guard rotations. He knew exactly which floorboards creaked.

It broke Valeria’s heart to realize that this little boy had spent the last two years sneaking around his own home like a prisoner trying to survive.

They reached the massive, wrought-iron doors of the North Wing.

The entire section of the mansion had been shut down after the death of Sofia Ríos, Alejandro’s wife. Rumor among the kitchen staff was that the wing was perfectly preserved, a tragic mausoleum to a murdered queen. No one was allowed inside. Even the head of security, Ignacio, stayed away.

Mateo reached up on his tiptoes and slid the small silver key into the hidden lock beneath the iron handle.

Click.

The heavy doors groaned softly as they pushed inward.

Valeria expected the smell of stale air and heavy dust. She expected darkness.

Instead, a faint, metallic scent hit her nose. Not dust. Gun oil. And something else... men’s cologne. Specifically, a sharp, expensive blend of cedar and bergamot.

Someone comes in here, Valeria realized, a cold sweat breaking out on the back of her neck. Regularly.

The moonlight illuminated the grand hallway of the North Wing. Sheets covered the furniture, casting long, eerie shadows that looked like crouching figures. Mateo didn't hesitate. He pulled Valeria past the master suite, past the abandoned nursery, and straight toward a small, inconspicuous door at the very end of the corridor—the old library.

Inside, the room was lined with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. Mateo let go of her hand and crawled under a heavy oak desk. He pressed his small shoulder against a wooden panel near the floorboards.

With a soft click, the panel popped open.

Valeria gasped. It wasn't just a hidden safe. It was an entire crawlspace, hollowed out behind the wall.

Mateo reached his little arm inside and pulled out a sleek, black leather ledger, heavily bound, alongside a small velvet box and a prepaid burner phone. He pushed them toward Valeria, looking up at her with eyes that were far too old for a child.

Valeria knelt, her hands shaking as she picked up the ledger.

She opened it. It wasn't in Alejandro’s handwriting. The numbers inside were staggering. Millions of pesos, offshore accounts, wire transfers. But it was the dates that made Valeria’s blood turn to ice.

The transfers were marked down to the exact day of Sofia Ríos’s murder.

Payment 1: Cartel de las Sombras - 5,000,000 MXN - Route Clearance. Payment 2: Sniper Team - 2,000,000 MXN - Target: S. Ríos.

"Oh my god," Valeria whispered, slapping a hand over her mouth.

Alejandro Ríos hadn't just lost his wife to a rival cartel ambush. The hit had been bought and paid for from inside his own organization. Inside his own house.

Mateo nudged her arm. He was pointing at the velvet box.

Valeria opened it. Inside rested a heavy, silver signet ring with a distinct, jagged black onyx stone. It was a custom piece, undeniable and unique.

Valeria recognized that ring. She had seen it just hours ago.

It belonged to Ignacio. Alejandro’s head of security. His most trusted right-hand man. The man who controlled every guard, every camera, and every lock in this entire estate.

Suddenly, a heavy footstep echoed in the corridor outside.
