Chapter 3 - The Ghost's LedgerThe sound of boots against marble struck like a hammer in the dead silence of the North Wing.

Step.
Step.
Step.
Valeria’s heart slammed against her ribs so hard it physically hurt. The heavy scent of cedar and bergamot suddenly wafted into the library, suffocating and sharp.
It was Ignacio. He was checking his hidden stash.
Panic seized Valeria’s throat, but a tiny hand gripped her wrist. Mateo’s eyes were wide, but he wasn't crying. This was a boy who had survived a warzone in his own mind. He pointed urgently toward the heavy velvet curtains draped over the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Clutching the ledger, the burner phone, and the ring tightly against her chest, Valeria scooped Mateo into her arms. She dove behind the thick, dusty fabric just as the brass handle of the library door slowly turned.
The door creaked open.
Valeria held her breath, pressing Mateo’s face into her shoulder. She squeezed her eyes shut, praying to God that her erratic heartbeat wasn't echoing off the walls.
The beam of a high-powered flashlight swept across the room, piercing through the crack in the curtains and illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air.
"Who’s in here?" Ignacio’s voice was a low, gravelly snarl.
Valeria could hear the metallic shhk-shhk of a handgun being racked.
Ignacio moved deeper into the room. His heavy boots thudded against the Persian rug, stopping right in front of the oak desk. Valeria heard a sharp intake of breath, followed by a violent string of curses.
He had seen the open panel.
"You little rat," Ignacio hissed under his breath. The sound of heavy furniture being shoved aside made Valeria flinch. He was tearing the desk apart, desperately searching for the missing ledger.
Through a millimeter gap in the curtains, Valeria watched the head of security pace like a caged predator. The dim light caught his face—he looked manic, his usually stoic and professional demeanor completely shattered. If he found them behind this curtain, there would be no trial. No questions. He would put a bullet in Valeria's head and likely silence the child who had just stolen his death sentence.
Mateo shifted slightly in her arms.
Ignacio’s head snapped toward the windows. His flashlight beam hit the velvet curtains dead center.
Valeria stopped breathing. Her lungs burned. She squeezed her eyes shut, waiting for the fabric to be ripped away.
BZZZZ. BZZZZ.
A sudden, sharp vibration shattered the tension. It was Ignacio’s radio strapped to his chest.
"Boss," a staticky voice crackled through the speaker. "Perimeter alarm, sector four. We have movement near the south gate."
Ignacio glared at the curtains for one agonizing second longer. "I'm on my way. Lock down the perimeter. No one goes in or out."
He turned on his heel and stormed out of the library, slamming the heavy door behind him.
Valeria collapsed to the floor, violently gasping for air. Her whole body shook uncontrollably. She looked down at Mateo. The boy’s face was pale, his eyes fixed on the heavy ledger in her hands.
Suddenly, everything made horrific sense.
The violent outbursts. The screaming. The attacks on anyone who came near him.
Mateo hadn't just lost his mother in that ambush. He had seen the ring on the man who gave the order. He knew the monster who killed his mother was the man who tucked him into bed at night, the man who stood right behind his father every single day.
The child wasn't crazy. He was trying to protect himself in a house entirely controlled by his mother's murderer.
"We have to tell your father," Valeria whispered, her voice trembling. "We have to show him this."

But as she looked out the window at the heavily armed guards patrolling the grounds—all men who answered directly to Ignacio—she realized the horrifying reality of their situation.
They were trapped in a fortress. And the enemy had the keys.
