Chapter 7 - A Kingdom CleansedBy noon, the Ríos estate looked like a warzone, though not a single shot had been fired outside the study.

Alejandro’s loyalists—the old guard from Culiacán—had descended upon the mansion in a convoy of black SUVs. Fifty heavily armed, fiercely loyal men systematically purged the estate of anyone hired by, vetted by, or friendly with Ignacio. Guards were stripped of their weapons, zip-tied, and thrown into the backs of transport trucks. Maids who had gossiped with the security team were paid off and escorted off the premises, warned never to speak of the Ríos family again.

Alejandro was tearing out the rot, and he was doing it with ruthless efficiency.

Valeria sat on the edge of Mateo’s bed, watching the little boy sleep. The emotional exhaustion of the morning had finally caught up with him. For the first time in two years, he was sleeping peacefully, without the violent thrashing and screaming that usually haunted his dreams.

The bedroom door opened quietly.

Alejandro stepped inside. He had changed his suit. He smelled of strong soap and fresh coffee, but the dark circles under his eyes betrayed the heavy toll of the day.

He didn't look like a terrifying cartel boss right now. He just looked like a broken, exhausted father.

"Is he... okay?" Alejandro asked, his voice rough.

"He is finally resting," Valeria whispered, standing up respectfully. She kept her eyes lowered, suddenly hyper-aware of the fact that this man had just executed his best friend in the room next door.

Alejandro walked over to the bed and gently brushed a lock of dark hair from Mateo’s forehead. His hand lingered there, trembling slightly.

"I owe you my son's life," Alejandro said, turning to look at Valeria. The intensity in his dark eyes made her breath catch in her throat. "And I owe you my empire. If Ignacio had stayed in power... he would have sold me to the Sombras eventually. We would all be dead."

"I just wanted to help Mateo, sir," Valeria said softly.

"You are no longer a maid, Valeria. And you will never call me 'sir' again." Alejandro reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek, black smartphone. He handed it to her. "Your brother's hospital debts have been paid in full. The best cardiologists in Monterrey are prepping him for surgery tomorrow morning. You have a private line to his doctors."

Valeria stared at the phone, a heavy sob tearing from her throat. She covered her mouth, tears of absolute relief flooding her eyes. The crushing weight that had suffocated her for months vanished in an instant.

"Thank you," she gasped, falling to her knees. "Thank you, Mr. Ríos... Alejandro. Thank you."

Alejandro caught her by the shoulders before her knees could hit the floor. His grip was firm, unexpectedly gentle. He pulled her back to her feet, his thumbs lightly brushing away the tears on her cheeks.

"You do not kneel in this house," he commanded, his voice dark and hypnotic. "You are the woman who saved the heir to the Ríos cartel. From now on, people kneel to you."

Valeria looked up into his eyes, her heart pounding for an entirely different reason. There was a dangerous, magnetic pull to this man, a gravity that she knew could destroy her if she wasn't careful.

"Pack your things," Alejandro said, stepping back, the professional mask sliding back into place. "We are leaving the estate."

"Leaving? Where are we going?"

"Ignacio didn't act alone," Alejandro said, his jaw tightening. "The Cartel de las Sombras bought him. And when they realize he is dead, they will come for my head. We are going to the mountain compound. Prepare the boy. We leave in twenty minutes."
