Chapter 14 - The Aftermath and the VowThe heavy steel door of the vault opened smoothly.

Mateo was exactly where Valeria had left him—curled into a tight ball under the heavy cot, his hands pressed firmly over his ears.
When he saw the heavy boots enter the room, he squeezed his eyes shut, bracing for the worst. But then, a soft, familiar voice called out to him.
"Mateo. It's me, baby. It's over."
Mateo opened his eyes. Valeria was kneeling on the floor, holding her arms open.
The little boy scrambled out from under the bed and threw himself into her chest, sobbing uncontrollably. Valeria held him tight, rocking him back and forth, murmuring soft words of comfort in Spanish.
Alejandro stood in the doorway, watching them. His shoulder was bleeding heavily, staining his white shirt completely red, but he didn't care. He looked at the young woman holding his son.
She was wearing a cheap dress covered in dust and gunpowder. Her hair was a tangled mess. But to Alejandro, she looked like royalty.
She hadn't just saved his life. She had fought for his family. In a world where everyone wanted his money or his power, this girl from the slums of Santa Catarina had risked everything simply because she loved his son.
And because, Alejandro realized with a sudden, profound clarity, she loved him.
Later that night, the compound was secured. Hector’s men had cleared the bodies, scrubbed the marble, and fortified the shattered walls.
Valeria sat on the edge of the massive bathtub in the master suite. Alejandro sat on a stool in front of her, shirtless, while she carefully cleaned the gunshot graze on his shoulder with antiseptic.
He hissed as she dabbed the wound with a cotton ball.
"Sorry," she whispered, her hands trembling slightly.
"Don't apologize," he said quietly, looking up at her. "You have steady hands, Valeria."
"Not today," she admitted, looking down at her lap. "When I pulled that trigger... I thought my heart was going to explode. I thought I was going to fail."
Alejandro reached up with his good arm and gently lifted her chin, forcing her to look into his eyes.
"You didn't fail," he said, his voice a deep, resonant rumble. "You stepped into a room full of monsters, and you became the deadliest thing in it. You are not a maid, Valeria. Do you understand me?"
"Then what am I?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper.
Alejandro stood up. He ignored the stinging in his shoulder. He stepped into her space, his massive frame completely enveloping hers.
"You are mine," he stated, leaving no room for argument or doubt. "And I am yours. No one will ever disrespect you. No one will ever look down on you. You sit at the head of the table now."

He leaned down and kissed her. It wasn't the desperate, violent kiss from the vault. This was a promise. A vow. It was slow, possessive, and burned all the way down to her soul.
Valeria wrapped her arms around his neck, finally surrendering to the pull she had fought since the day she met him. She belonged in this dangerous world now. Not as a servant, but as its queen.
