Chapter 2: Dust Settling
The next morning, the mansion felt distinctly empty. Vanessa’s abrupt departure had sent shockwaves through the remaining staff, creating a tense atmosphere of whispers and side-glances. Emily went about her usual duties, pushing her cleaning cart down the long, sunlit corridors, but her mind was elsewhere.
Margaret approached her in the conservatory, handing her a cup of hot chamomile tea. "You shouldn't be working today, Emily. Mr. Daniel gave you the rest of the week off with pay. You should be resting."
"I need to keep my hands busy, Margaret," Emily replied, taking the warm mug. "If I sit still, all I can feel is her hand hitting my face. All I can hear is her calling me a thief."
Margaret sighed, her lined face heavy with sympathy. "People like Vanessa, they think the world exists for them to conquer, and the rest of us are just the dirt they walk on. But she fell into her own trap."

Emily nodded, staring out at the manicured gardens. But a nagging question kept clawing at the back of her mind. Why? Vanessa was wealthy, engaged to Daniel, and had the world at her fingertips. Why would a woman who could buy a dozen diamond statement necklaces stoop so low as to steal one, just to frame a lowly housekeeper? It didn't make any sense. It wasn't just malice; it was desperation.
Determined to find closure, Emily made a decision. She parked her cart outside the guest suite Vanessa had occupied. The room had been stripped bare, but Emily knew that when people leave in a panic, they always leave something behind.
