Chapter 4: Shadows in the Greenhouse

Chapter 4: Shadows in the Greenhouse
Days turned into a week, and a fragile sense of normalcy returned to the estate. Emily was promoted from housekeeper to head of household staff, a gesture from Daniel to make amends for the ordeal. She traded her uniform for a tailored suit, but the authority felt heavy on her shoulders.
One evening, while locking up the estate's massive glass greenhouse, Emily heard a rustling behind a row of orchids.
"Who's there?" she called out, reaching for the radio on her belt.
From the shadows, a disheveled figure emerged. It was Vanessa. Her sleek black dress was replaced by a dirty trench coat, her hair matted, her face pale and drawn.
"Don't call security, Emily. Please," Vanessa begged, her voice cracking.
Emily froze, her thumb hovering over the panic button. "You shouldn't be here. Daniel will have you arrested."
"I have nowhere else to go," Vanessa sobbed, collapsing onto a wrought-iron bench. "The people I owe money to... they found me. They took my car, my luggage. They said if I don't pay them by Friday, they're going to kill me."
Emily stared at the woman who had slapped her, who had tried to throw her in prison. The anger flared up, hot and righteous, but it was quickly extinguished by the sheer, pathetic reality of Vanessa's current state.

"Why are you telling me this?" Emily asked coldly. "I owe you absolutely nothing."
"Because you're the only one who knows the truth," Vanessa whispered, looking up with tear-filled eyes. "And because you need to know... the necklace I tried to steal? The one in the safe? It’s a fake, Emily. The real one has been gone for years."
