Chapter 3: The Crumpled Truth

The guest suite smelled faintly of Vanessa’s expensive, suffocating perfume. Emily systematically checked the drawers, the closet, and under the heavy oak bedframe. Nothing. It seemed Vanessa’s hasty retreat had been surprisingly thorough.

Frustrated, Emily turned toward the adjoining bathroom. She knelt beside the ornate gold wastebasket. The housekeeping staff hadn't emptied it yet. Inside, beneath several discarded makeup wipes, was a crumpled piece of heavy cardstock.

Emily carefully smoothed it out on the marble vanity. It was a letter from a prominent offshore bank, stamped with a bright red URGENT seal. As Emily scanned the legal jargon, her eyes widened.

...Notice of Default. Accounts frozen... immediate liquidation of assets required to satisfy outstanding debts... pending criminal investigation for wire fraud...

The realization hit Emily like a freight train. Vanessa wasn't just acting out of spite; she was completely bankrupt. The engagement to Daniel was a sham, a desperate life raft to save herself from financial ruin. But why frame Emily for the necklace?

"Because she needed the insurance money," a voice said from the doorway.

Emily gasped, spinning around to see Daniel leaning against the doorframe, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. He looked exhausted, the shadows under his eyes speaking to a sleepless night.

"I did some digging of my own this morning," Daniel said, stepping into the room. "Vanessa’s family lost everything last month. She was trying to smuggle the necklace out to sell it on the black market, but when you walked into the foyer, she panicked. She used you as a scapegoat."
