Chapter 8: The Gathering Storm

Chapter 8: The Gathering Storm
Emily didn't answer right away. She stood up, her mind a whirlwind of conflicting emotions. On one hand, Margaret had stolen millions of dollars. On the other, she had done it to save her child's life, driven to desperation by the very family that now employed Emily as their head of staff.
"I need to tell Daniel," Emily finally said.
Margaret nodded slowly, closing her eyes. "I understand. I'll pack my things."
"No," Emily said firmly. "Don't pack anything yet. Wait here."
Emily marched straight to Daniel’s private study. She knocked once and entered. Daniel was at his mahogany desk, reviewing financial reports. He looked up, surprised by her sudden intrusion.
"Emily, what is it?" he asked.
"Sir, we need to have a very difficult conversation," Emily said, standing tall. "It’s about the necklace. And it’s about your father."
Over the next hour, Emily laid everything bare. She told him about Vanessa’s return, the revelation of the fake necklace, and finally, Margaret’s confession. She didn't hold back on the details of Daniel's father denying the medical loan.
Daniel sat frozen, absorbing the barrage of information. When she finished, the room fell into a heavy, oppressive silence. He looked at the portrait of his father hanging above the fireplace, his jaw tight.

"My father let a child suffer over money we wouldn't have even noticed was gone," Daniel murmured, disgusted.
"Margaret committed a crime, sir," Emily said softly. "But she did it out of a desperation this family helped create. How you handle this will define what kind of man you are, compared to your father."
