Chapter 7: The Loyal Servant's Secret
"I spoke to Vanessa," Emily said, taking a seat on the edge of the bed. "She realized the necklace in the bag was a fake. I checked the vault logs. It was you, wasn't it?"
Margaret let out a long, shuddering breath and put her knitting aside. She reached over to her nightstand and picked up a framed photograph of a smiling young girl in a wheelchair.
"Thirty years ago," Margaret began, her voice trembling, "my daughter, Sarah, was diagnosed with a rare spinal condition. The surgeries cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. My insurance didn't cover it. I begged the old master—Daniel’s father—for a loan. He laughed in my face and told me to manage my finances better."
Tears spilled down Margaret’s weathered cheeks. "I watched my little girl in agony. I was desperate. So, I took the necklace. I had a jeweler in the city create a perfect replica. I swapped them, sold the real stones piecemeal on the black market, and paid for Sarah's surgeries."
Emily listened in stunned silence. The sheer scale of the theft was staggering, yet the motive was painfully human.
"Sarah lived ten more beautiful years because of that money," Margaret said, wiping her face. "When she passed, I accepted my guilt. I've spent every day since then waiting for the police to knock on my door. When Vanessa accused you, I was terrified she had discovered the truth and was using you to cover her tracks."

"She didn't know you took it," Emily said gently. "She just knew it was fake."
"What are you going to do, Emily?" Margaret asked, looking utterly defeated.
