Chapter 9: Judgment

Chapter 9: Judgment
An hour later, Margaret was summoned to the study. She walked in looking frail, expecting to see police officers waiting to place her in handcuffs. Instead, she found only Daniel and Emily.
"Sit down, Margaret," Daniel said gently.
Margaret sat, trembling. "Mr. Daniel, I am so sorry. I am ready to face the consequences."
Daniel leaned forward, resting his elbows on the desk. "I reviewed the family ledgers from thirty years ago. I saw the formal request you submitted for a loan, and I saw my father's signature denying it. What you did was a crime, Margaret. But what my father did was a sin."
Margaret sobbed quietly into her hands.
"The insurance policy on that necklace was canceled years ago, meaning the only loss here is personal, not corporate," Daniel continued. "I will not be pressing charges. I will not have you arrested. You have served this family for forty years, and despite everything, you raised me when my own parents were too busy. Consider the cost of the necklace a very, very late bonus."
Margaret looked up, her eyes wide with shock. "You're... you're letting me go?"

"I am officially retiring you, with a full pension," Daniel said, offering a small, sad smile. "You deserve peace, Margaret."
Emily felt a profound wave of relief wash over her. Daniel had chosen compassion over vengeance. The cycle of cruelty that had almost ruined Emily's life, and Vanessa's, and Margaret's, was finally broken.
