Chapter 14 - Elena Vale Speaks

At noon, thousands of employees logged into the company broadcast.

Elena stood in the same ballroom where Julian had humiliated her twelve hours earlier.

There was no dramatic music.

No stage decoration.

No champagne.

Only a microphone.

Richard stood several feet behind her.

Miriam remained near the wall.

Elena looked into the camera.

“My name is Elena Vale.”

She paused.

“For years, many of you knew me as Elena Mercer.”

Her voice did not shake.

“I helped build this company beside Julian Mercer.”

Employees watched from offices, kitchens, housekeeping stations, front desks, spas, airports, and conference rooms across the world.

“Many of you were told that Julian founded Aurelia Resorts.”

She breathed slowly.

“That description was incomplete.”

Screens displayed the corporate structure.

Vale Legacy Trust.

Property companies.

Capital entities.

Management subsidiaries.

Aurelia.

Elena continued.

“My family has controlled the underlying properties and majority economic interests for generations.”

Whispers spread through rooms around the world.

“Julian was given extraordinary authority.”

She looked toward the camera.

“That authority was earned through work.”

Her expression hardened.

“And it was lost through conduct.”

Elena did not mention the affair.

She did not mention the necklace.

She did not mention the emails.

Instead, she spoke about governance.

Responsibility.

Trust.

Employees who had spent years building something larger than any executive.

“Aurelia is not a king.”

“It is not a throne.”

“It is not one man's empire.”

She paused.

“It is a responsibility.”

Inside a police interview room, Julian watched the broadcast on his attorney's phone.

His new attorney, Charles Wynn, sat beside him.

“She is destroying your public position.”

Julian stared at the screen.

“No.”

Charles looked at him.

“She is taking it.”

At the resort, Elena continued.

“No employee will lose a job because of the leadership investigation.”

Dozens of people exhaled with relief.

“No guest reservation will be canceled.”

“No supplier will be abandoned.”

“No international property will close.”

She placed both hands lightly on the podium.

“And no executive, including me, will ever again be permitted to confuse authority with ownership.”

That sentence spread across social media within minutes.

When the broadcast ended, employees began applauding.

First softly.

Then louder.

Elena stood frozen.

She had expected suspicion.

Maybe anger.

She had not expected gratitude.

Daniel approached after the cameras shut off.

“You should see this.”

He handed her a phone.

Messages were arriving from employees.

Stories.

Complaints.

Warnings.

Dozens described Julian's behavior.

Several implicated Marcus.

One named Vanessa.

Then a message arrived from an employee in Geneva.

I THINK YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MERCER CROWN.

Attached was a contract.

Elena opened it.

Her heart accelerated.

Julian had agreed to sell a forty-percent interest in Mercer Crown Hospitality to an unknown investor.

The investor had promised seventy-five million dollars.

The deal was scheduled to close in forty-eight hours.

Miriam examined the document.

“This investor expected to receive Aurelia assets.”

“Assets Julian doesn't own.”

“Yes.”

“Who is the investor?”

Miriam scrolled.

The buyer was hidden behind an offshore company.

Richard's face changed when he saw the registered agent.

“What?”

Elena asked.

Her father looked at her.

“I know this structure.”

“From where?”

Richard's answer was quiet.

“Your uncle.”

Elena stared at him.

“My uncle Thomas?”

May you like

Richard nodded.

And suddenly the betrayal was no longer limited to her husband.
