Chapter 9 - The Woman Who Disappeared

Claire agreed to meet Elena at a private law office owned by Miriam's firm.
She was supposed to arrive at 4:30 a.m.
At 4:42, she had not appeared.
At 4:50, Miriam called her.
No answer.
At 4:58, Elena called again.
The phone went straight to voicemail.
Richard paced behind her.
âShe changed her mind.â
Elena shook her head.
âShe sounded terrified.â
âAt five in the morning, everyone sounds terrified.â
âNo.â
Elena looked toward Miriam.
âCan we locate her?â
âNot legally without assistance.â
âThen call the police.â
Miriam hesitated.
âWith what allegation?â
âA witness told us she possessed evidence of financial crimes and possible conspiracy.â
âThat will get attention.â
Richard stopped pacing.
âDo it.â
Meanwhile, Julian had reached a private apartment across town.
It belonged to Marcus.
Vanessa had come with them.
Nobody spoke for several minutes.
Marcus poured himself whiskey.
Julian stood by the window.
Vanessa finally broke the silence.
âYou knew about Elena's money.â
Julian turned.
âNot enough.â
âYou told me she was practically broke without you.â
âI told you what you needed to know.â
Vanessa stared at him.
âWhat I needed to know?â
âDon't start.â
âYou used me.â
Julian laughed.
âYou were sleeping with a married man.â
âSo were you.â
Marcus slammed his glass onto the counter.
âBoth of you shut up.â
They looked at him.
Marcus opened a laptop.
âWe have bigger problems.â
Julian approached.
âWhat?â
âClaire Benton.â
Julian's face changed.
Vanessa noticed.
âWho is Claire?â
Marcus ignored her.
âShe called Elena.â
âHow do you know?â
âBecause someone from Miriam Shaw's firm accessed archived employee records fifteen minutes after Claire's call.â
Julian stared at him.
âHow much does she have?â
Marcus shook his head.
âI don't know.â
âYou said you handled her.â
âI paid her severance.â
âYou threatened her.â
âI persuaded her.â
Julian's eyes darkened.
âShe copied emails.â
Marcus went still.
âHow do you know?â
âShe told Elena.â
Marcus cursed.
Vanessa stepped backward.
âWhat emails?â
Neither man answered.
That frightened her more than anything they could have said.
Marcus began typing.
âWe need to know where Claire is.â
Julian looked toward him.
âNo.â
Marcus stopped.
âWhat?â
âNo more mistakes.â
âYou think evidence disappearing is a mistake?â
âI think attracting police attention is.â
Marcus gave him a cold smile.
âYou grew cautious very quickly.â
Julian leaned closer.
âI grew intelligent.â
Vanessa moved toward the door.
Julian noticed.
âWhere are you going?â
âHome.â
âYou stay here.â
Her face hardened.
âYou don't control me.â
âNo?â
He glanced toward the emerald pendant she no longer wore.
âYou were happy enough when you thought I controlled everything else.â
Vanessa stared at him.
Something in her expression changed.
She had admired Julian's power.
Now she was seeing the man underneath it.
And the view frightened her.
At 5:21 a.m., Elena's phone rang.
This time, it was Claire's number.
Elena answered instantly.
âClaire?â
No one spoke.
Then a man's voice whispered.
âStop looking.â
May you like
The call ended.
Five seconds later, Claire's phone went offline.
