Chapter 7 - Six Months Earlier

Elena stared at the timestamp.

Six months.

The same month her grandmother's pendant disappeared.

The same month Julian began insisting Elena sign several estate-planning documents.

She looked at Miriam.

“Could he have known?”

“Not everything.”

“What could he have discovered?”

Miriam's expression was troubled.

“Enough to start asking questions.”

Julian watched them from across the penthouse.

“What?”

Elena turned toward him.

“Six months ago, you tried to access the Vale Legacy Trust.”

Julian did not answer quickly enough.

That was answer enough.

Her stomach tightened.

“You knew there was something.”

“I knew your father was hiding assets.”

“My father?”

“You never told me anything.”

“You never asked.”

Julian laughed bitterly.

“I asked constantly.”

“No.”

Elena stepped toward him.

“You asked how much money I would inherit.”

His face hardened.

“You asked why my father had influence over lenders.”

Another step.

“You asked why certain investors returned my calls.”

“Elena.”

“You never once asked me why.”

She held up the tablet.

“How did you get the trust name?”

Julian looked toward Vanessa.

Vanessa's eyes widened.

“Don't.”

Elena saw it immediately.

“You told him?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.”

Julian spoke.

“Vanessa worked for Vale Private Capital.”

Elena felt the room tilt.

Vanessa had introduced herself months earlier as an independent luxury-brand consultant.

Elena looked at her.

“When?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Five years ago.”

“How long?”

“Eighteen months.”

Elena turned to Miriam.

Miriam already had her phone out.

“We'll verify employment records.”

Vanessa's voice became defensive.

“I never had access to private trust documents.”

“But you knew the family name.”

“Yes.”

“And you knew Julian was married to a Vale.”

“Yes.”

Elena's voice fell.

“Did you meet him before the affair?”

Vanessa looked at Julian.

Julian stared at the floor.

That silence cut deeper than the answer.

“How long?”

Elena asked.

Vanessa whispered.

“Almost two years.”

Elena closed her eyes.

She had believed three months.

Maybe six.

Two years meant birthdays.

Anniversaries.

Christmases.

Business trips.

Every memory rewrote itself.

Julian stepped closer.

“It wasn't serious at first.”

Elena opened her eyes.

“That is supposed to help?”

“I made mistakes.”

“You constructed another life.”

“Elena, listen to me.”

“No.”

Her voice sharpened for the first time.

“You listen.”

The room froze.

“For nine years, I protected you from the truth because I wanted to know whether you loved me without the Vale name.”

She pointed toward the city.

“I brought you opportunities without taking credit.”

She pointed toward the resort beneath them.

“I convinced my father to trust you.”

Her eyes filled but she did not cry.

“I defended you when the board questioned your spending.”

Julian's expression changed.

“I persuaded my family to let you stand at the front of an empire you did not own because I believed we were building something together.”

“Elena.”

“And while I was protecting your dignity, you were investigating my inheritance.”

Julian whispered.

“I needed security.”

“You had a wife.”

She took one step backward.

“You wanted ownership.”

Julian said nothing.

Elena turned toward Miriam.

“Find every document he asked me to sign in the last twelve months.”

Miriam nodded.

Julian's eyes suddenly shifted.

A tiny movement.

But Elena saw it.

Fear.

Real fear.

She looked back at him.

May you like

“What did I sign, Julian?”

His silence told her this night was no longer only about adultery.
