Chapter 17 - The Hearing

The hearing began at 9:00 a.m. local time.

Julian sat with two attorneys.

Thomas sat behind him.

Vanessa was nowhere to be seen.

Elena entered with Richard and Miriam.

Julian watched her walk past without looking at him.

The judge reviewed the petition.

Julian's lawyers argued that the Vale family had weaponized hidden ownership to destroy him without due process.

They described Elena as emotionally compromised.

They described Richard as controlling.

They described Julian as the operational architect responsible for Aurelia's success.

Some of it was true.

That made the lies more dangerous.

Then Julian testified.

“I loved Elena.”

Elena watched without expression.

“I still love her.”

Miriam wrote something on a legal pad.

“I made personal mistakes.”

Julian lowered his head.

“But this corporate retaliation is disproportionate.”

His lawyer displayed the video of Elena being removed from the resort.

Julian spoke carefully.

“She was disruptive.”

Elena almost smiled.

The video showed no disruption.

Only Julian ordering security forward.

His attorney quickly moved on.

Then came the medical records.

Julian claimed he had worried about Elena's mental and physical health.

He suggested Richard had exploited her vulnerability.

When his testimony ended, Miriam stood.

She began with one question.

“Mr. Mercer, when did you first learn about the Vale Legacy Trust?”

Julian hesitated.

“Approximately eight months ago.”

“From whom?”

He glanced toward Thomas.

“Thomas Vale.”

“Before that, did your wife ever use the trust to control your decisions?”

“No.”

“Did she ever threaten your employment?”

“No.”

“Did she ever remove your access?”

“No.”

“Did she permit you to serve as CEO?”

“Yes.”

“For nine years?”

“Yes.”

Miriam walked closer.

“Then the person you describe as unstable allowed you nearly unrestricted operational authority for almost a decade.”

Julian said nothing.

Miriam displayed the emails.

CONTROL OPTIONS.

SUCCESSION.

ELENA REMOVAL STRATEGY.

Julian's face tightened.

His lawyers objected.

The judge permitted limited questioning.

Miriam read Julian's own sentence.

IF ELENA MAKES A PUBLIC SCENE, REMOVAL BECOMES JUSTIFIABLE.

Then she played the ballroom recording.

Julian's voice filled the courtroom.

“She needs to understand she's replaceable.”

The judge looked toward him.

Miriam continued.

“Was the removal spontaneous?”

Julian did not answer.

“Mr. Mercer?”

“No.”

Elena felt something inside her release.

The truth had finally entered a room where Julian could not control it.

Then the courtroom doors opened.

Vanessa entered.

Julian turned.

His face changed.

She walked directly toward Miriam.

Her own attorney followed.

Miriam looked surprised.

Vanessa handed her a folder.

Julian stood.

“What are you doing?”

The judge ordered him to sit.

Vanessa looked at Elena.

“I lied in the affidavit.”

Silence fell.

“I was told the petition would only pressure Elena into a settlement.”

Julian stared at her.

Vanessa continued.

“Julian promised me twenty million dollars after he gained control.”

Thomas stood suddenly.

His lawyer pulled him back down.

Vanessa looked toward Thomas.

“And Thomas Vale promised Julian seventy-five million if he delivered three resort properties.”

The judge's expression hardened.

Vanessa handed over messages.

Contracts.

Voice recordings.

Everything.

The hearing ended three hours later.

The emergency preservation order was dissolved.

Julian's petition was dismissed.

And the judge referred evidence of possible fraud and perjury to prosecutors.

Outside the courthouse, Julian caught Elena near the steps.

“You planned this.”

Elena turned.

“No.”

“Vanessa.”

“I didn't know she was coming.”

He searched her face.

“Then why aren't you surprised?”
