Chapter 8 - The Signature He Needed

By 3:40 a.m., Miriam's legal team had located the documents.
There were seventeen.
Most were harmless.
Insurance forms.
Travel authorizations.
Corporate disclosures.
Two were not.
One transferred Elena's voting proxy in Aurelia Management during periods of medical incapacity.
The second amended spousal succession rights concerning certain privately held assets.
Elena stared at the copies.
âI don't remember signing this.â
Miriam pointed to the date.
âYou were hospitalized.â
Elena's skin went cold.
Seven months earlier, she had undergone emergency surgery for appendicitis.
Julian had spent the first evening beside her hospital bed.
He brought documents the following morning.
He told her the board needed signatures before a financing deadline.
She had been exhausted.
Medicated.
Trusting.
She signed where he pointed.
Richard stood beside the conference table.
His face had lost all color.
âWould these documents have given him control?â
âNot immediately,â Miriam said.
âBut if Elena had died or been declared incapacitated, he could have asserted substantial rights.â
Richard looked at his daughter.
Elena could barely breathe.
âWhy?â
She whispered.
Nobody answered.
She looked toward Miriam.
âCould he have known I was sick before the surgery?â
âIt was appendicitis.â
âI know.â
Elena pressed her palms against the table.
âBut why prepare succession documents before a routine emergency surgery?â
Miriam hesitated.
âThey were drafted three days before you went to the hospital.â
The room became silent.
Elena slowly lifted her head.
âThree days?â
âYes.â
A chill moved along her arms.
Her appendicitis had begun suddenly.
Or that was what she had believed.
Richard turned toward Miriam.
âI want the medical records.â
âAll of them?â
âEverything.â
Elena shook her head.
âDad.â
âNo.â
Richard's voice was controlled but fierce.
âThis has gone beyond protecting your feelings.â
Elena wanted to object.
Then her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered cautiously.
âHello?â
A woman's voice whispered.
âMrs. Mercer?â
âYes.â
âMy name is Claire Benton.â
Elena looked at Miriam.
The name meant nothing to her.
âI worked as Mr. Mercer's executive assistant until last year.â
Elena remembered.
Claire had resigned suddenly.
Julian said she left for family reasons.
âWhat do you want?â
âI saw what happened tonight.â
Elena waited.
Claire took a shaky breath.
âI have something you need.â
âWhat?â
âEmails.â
Miriam moved closer.
Elena put the call on speaker.
âWhat emails?â
âBetween Mr. Mercer and Marcus Hale.â
Richard's eyes narrowed.
âAbout what?â
Claire hesitated.
âYour family.â
Elena gripped the phone.
âHow long ago?â
âAlmost eighteen months.â
Miriam immediately began writing.
âClaire, where are you?â
âI don't want to say over the phone.â
âAre you in danger?â
âI don't know.â
Her voice cracked.
âI copied the emails because I thought Mr. Mercer was planning something illegal.â
Elena's heart pounded.
âWhat did they say?â
Claire became silent for several seconds.
Then she whispered.
âThey were trying to figure out how Julian could gain control if something happened to you.â
Elena closed her eyes.
Claire continued.
âAnd there was one email about your surgery.â
Richard went completely still.
Elena forced herself to speak.
âWhat did it say?â
May you like
Claire answered.
âIt said the hospital window was their best opportunity.â
