Chapter 4 - The Woman He Underestimated

Elena spent the emergency meeting inside a private townhouse owned by her family.
She had not returned there in almost ten years.
Her childhood photographs were still arranged along the staircase.
Her mother's piano still stood beneath the bay window.
Nothing had changed.
And yet Elena felt like a stranger inside it.
Richard entered the sitting room carrying two cups of coffee.
He placed one beside her.
âYou don't have to watch every meeting.â
âYes, I do.â
âYou know how this ends.â
Elena looked toward the laptop.
âNo, Dad.â
She shook her head.
âI know how the documents end.â
Richard sat opposite her.
âThat isn't the same thing.â
âNo.â
She stared into the coffee.
âI married Julian because I believed he loved the woman I was before he knew what my family controlled.â
Richard said nothing.
âWhen we met, I was using Mom's surname professionally.â
âI remember.â
âHe thought I was a junior development consultant.â
âHe should have respected you even if you were unemployed.â
Elena gave a sad smile.
âI know that now.â
She remembered Julian at twenty-eight.
Ambitious.
Charming.
Hungry.
He used to sit with her in cheap coffee shops and sketch hotel concepts on napkins.
He listened when she spoke.
He asked questions.
He made her believe partnership meant equality.
After their engagement, Richard had offered Elena a choice.
Reveal the Vale inheritance immediately.
Or allow Julian to prove himself inside the business without knowing who controlled it.
Elena had chosen silence.
She wanted a husband, not a man seduced by her surname.
Over the years, the secret became harder to reveal.
Julian's confidence grew into arrogance.
His ambition became entitlement.
And Elena kept telling herself he would eventually return to the man she married.
Richard leaned forward.
âWhy didn't you tell me about Vanessa?â
Elena's jaw tightened.
âI didn't know for certain until three weeks ago.â
âThe necklace?â
âThat was when I knew.â
Richard looked furious.
âYou recognized it tonight?â
âYes.â
âAnd you still walked into that ballroom?â
âI wanted to see whether he would lie to my face.â
âDid he?â
âHe told me Vanessa had purchased it in Geneva.â
Richard gave a humorless laugh.
âThat pendant hasn't been commercially available for eighty years.â
âI reminded him.â
âAnd?â
âHe told me grief was making me irrational.â
Richard's face hardened at the reference to Elena's deceased grandmother.
Elena looked back at the laptop.
The board meeting continued.
Then her phone displayed an incoming message from Julian.
CALL ME.
She ignored it.
Another arrived.
THIS HAS GONE FAR ENOUGH.
Then another.
YOU ARE DESTROYING EVERYTHING WE BUILT.
Elena stared at the words.
Everything we built.
That phrase almost made her answer.
Instead, she typed four words.
You threw me out.
The reply came instantly.
WE CAN FIX THIS.
Elena slowly deleted his contact name.
Julian Mercer became nothing but a phone number.
Before she could put the phone down, Miriam called.
âElena.â
âWhat happened?â
âThe suspension passed.â
Elena closed her eyes.
âHow many votes?â
âTen in favor.â
âAnd against?â
âTwo.â
She knew one would have been Julian.
âWho was the other?â
Miriam hesitated.
âMarcus Hale.â
Elena opened her eyes.
Something cold moved through her.
âWhy would Marcus protect him?â
âWe don't know.â
Elena remembered seeing Marcus beside Julian in the ballroom.
Something about his expression returned to her.
Not embarrassment.
Not shock.
Fear.
âMiriam.â
âYes?â
âFreeze Marcus's administrative privileges too.â
There was a pause.
âYou think he's involved?â
May you like
âI think Julian wasn't acting alone.â
And three minutes later, inside a locked office at Aurelia Grand, Marcus Hale opened a secret laptop and began deleting files.
