Chapter 9: The Envelope

Chapter 9: The Envelope

I stopped just inches from him, the entire cavernous cathedral now dead silent. Even the organist, sensing the impending disaster, had slowly lifted his hands from the keys. The silence was deafening, broken only by the sound of the rain beating against the stained-glass windows.

“I brought a wedding gift,” I said smoothly, my voice carrying perfectly in the quiet acoustics, reaching the front pews with ease. I reached into my coat and pulled out the sealed manila envelope. I pressed it flat against his chest, right over his pounding heart.

Dominic swatted my hand away as if I had burned him, and the envelope fell to the polished marble floor between us with a soft smack.

“I don’t want anything from you, you crazy bitch,” he spat venomously. “Take your bastard daughter and leave. This is my day. My family.”

“Pick it up, Dominic,” I whispered, staring dead into his eyes, refusing to blink. “Unless you want me to read it into the priest's microphone for your livestream.”

Brooke had hurried over, abandoning her bouquet, clutching Dominic’s arm with desperate, shaking hands. “Dom, please, just get security! Throw her out! Don't listen to her!” Her voice was shrill, laced with a sudden, wild panic that hadn't been there a moment before. She was staring at the envelope on the floor as if it were a live hand grenade.

Dominic, sensing her bizarre, out-of-place terror, frowned. His brow furrowed in confusion. He bent down and snatched the envelope from the floor.
