Chapter 11 - THE MAN IN THE NORTH TOWER
Police found Daniel Ross two blocks from the construction site.
He was wearing a maintenance uniform and attempting to reach a subway station.
When officers called his name, he ran.
They caught him before he reached the platform.
Daniel had not been imprisoned in the tower.
He had been hiding there.
During questioning, he revealed that Charles’s men attacked him after learning he had copied the financial records.
He escaped before they could kill him.
Daniel believed the police were compromised.
He disappeared and began collecting evidence alone.
He lived inside the abandoned tower because Cole Development employees rarely entered it.
“Why didn’t he contact me?” Mary asked.
Rebecca read from the interview transcript.
“He tried.”
“Ethan intercepted the messages.”
Daniel had sent letters to Whitmore Capital’s legal office.
Ethan persuaded a mailroom supervisor to divert them.
He had also placed software on Mary’s phone that blocked calls from unknown numbers.
Mary remembered Ethan insisting on setting up her new phone after her father’s funeral.
At the time, it felt caring.
Now every kind gesture appeared sharpened into a weapon.
Daniel agreed to testify.
He also surrendered a recording of Charles discussing Thomas Whitmore.
The recording was clear enough to support conspiracy charges.
Federal prosecutors arrested Charles that evening.
Ethan was charged with fraud, obstruction, identity theft, and conspiracy.
His involvement in Thomas’s death remained under investigation.
Mary expected him to remain in custody.
Instead, a judge granted temporary release under strict conditions after Ethan’s attorneys argued he had not personally touched the vehicle.
He surrendered his passport.
He was ordered to stay away from Mary.
He walked out of the courthouse before midnight.
News cameras surrounded him.
Ethan stopped on the steps.
“I loved Mary.”
His voice sounded wounded.
“I made personal mistakes.”
“But powerful people are using those mistakes to destroy my family.”
Mary watched the interview from her apartment.
Ethan looked directly into the camera.
“Mary knows the truth about her father.”
The statement confused reporters.
It terrified Mary.
Minutes later, an encrypted message appeared on her laptop.
It contained a photograph of Thomas Whitmore inside the Cole family’s hidden basement office.
The date stamp showed it had been taken one week before his death.
Thomas was opening the black ledger.
Someone stood behind him.
Only one hand was visible.
The hand wore a gold signet ring.
