Chapter 15 - THE BOARDROOM COUP
Whitmore Capital’s emergency board meeting began at nine on Monday morning.
Nine directors attended in person.
Three joined through encrypted video.
Charles’s allies demanded Mary step aside until the criminal investigations ended.
They argued that her personal involvement created instability.
One director suggested appointing an interim chairman.
The candidate he proposed had worked with Charles for fifteen years.
Mary listened without interruption.
When the speeches ended, she placed a stack of documents on the table.
“Before we vote, everyone should review the conflict disclosures.”
Rebecca distributed the records.
Three directors had received consulting payments from Cole-controlled companies.
Two held undeclared investments in the Blackridge project.
The director who proposed removing Mary had accepted more than two million dollars through a shell company.
He stood abruptly.
“This information was obtained illegally.”
“It was obtained from the company’s own compliance servers.”
Mary looked around the table.
“My father suspected corruption inside Whitmore Capital.”
“He was correct.”
“This board did not fail because it trusted Charles Cole.”
“It failed because several members were being paid to trust him.”
The compromised directors attempted to leave.
Federal agents were waiting outside.
After the arrests, only seven voting members remained.
Mary proposed canceling the Blackridge merger permanently.
The decision passed unanimously.
She then proposed placing Cole Development into court-supervised restructuring to protect its employees and legitimate creditors.
One director looked surprised.
“You could force the company into liquidation.”
“I could.”
“Why save it?”
“Thousands of employees did not help Charles steal money.”
“They should not lose their futures because their executives committed crimes.”
Mary approved a fund to continue salaries during restructuring.
She removed the Cole family from management.
Daniel Ross was appointed temporary financial adviser.
Olivia entered a witness protection agreement and agreed to testify.
By evening, the Cole empire no longer belonged to the Coles.
Ethan watched the news from his detention cell.
The judge had revoked his release after the hotel attack.
His attorneys requested another hearing.
It was denied.
Then prosecutors revealed a new charge.
Attempted kidnapping.
Ethan insisted he only wanted the silver drive.
One of the masked men disagreed.
He testified that Ethan ordered them to take Mary to the unfinished north tower.
A room had been prepared there.
Inside the room, investigators found restraints, sedatives, and another forged medical evaluation.
The plan had been to make Mary disappear for seventy-two hours.
During that time, Ethan would present the emergency proxy and seize control.
The wedding betrayal had exposed the plan only hours before it began.
