The story reached the media before sunrise.
Cole Development released a statement claiming Mary had suffered an emotional breakdown on her wedding day.
The statement did not mention Olivia.
It did not mention the forged proxy.
It described the financial freeze as a reckless decision made by a grieving heiress.
Several business networks repeated the accusation.
Commentators questioned whether Mary had enough experience to control Whitmore Capital.
Old photographs showed her leaving therapy appointments after her father’s death.
Anonymous sources described her as unpredictable.
Mary knew exactly where the information came from.
Ethan and Charles had prepared the campaign long before the wedding.
They expected to launch it during a future divorce.
Now their attorneys had simply moved the date forward.
Rebecca advised silence.
“Federal charges are coming.”
“We do not need to fight a public battle.”
Mary watched a television anchor describe her as devastated and irrational.
“I remained silent after my father died.”
“That silence allowed Ethan to become the hero of my story.”
“I will not let him write the ending.”
At noon, Mary entered the Aurelia Grand ballroom.
The wedding decorations had not been removed.
White roses still covered the aisle.
The empty chairs faced the altar.
Mary stood where she had been expected to exchange vows.

She displayed copies of the forged proxy.
“The suspension occurred because Ethan Cole and his father attempted to steal control of my company.”
She played the hotel footage showing Ethan and Charles entering the suite.
She displayed the altered medical documents.
Then she played Ethan’s recorded words.
Mary trusts me now.
By tomorrow, she will belong to us.
The ballroom became completely silent.
Mary looked directly into the cameras.
“I attended therapy because my father died.”
“I grieved because I loved him.”
“Seeking help did not make me incompetent.”
“Trusting the wrong man did not make me weak.”
“And refusing to finance the people who exploited my grief does not make me unstable.”
The press conference lasted eleven minutes.
By the time Mary left the ballroom, public opinion had changed.
Yet one reporter shouted a question that stopped her.
“Ms. Whitmore, is it true Olivia Grant is pregnant with Ethan Cole’s child?”
Mary turned.
She knew nothing about a pregnancy.
Across the room, Olivia stood beside a side entrance.
