Chapter 19 - THE LETTER SENT AFTER DEATH

The package had been stored in a Boston law office for nearly three years.
Instructions required it to be delivered when the Blackridge investigation officially closed.
The final civil case had ended that morning.
Mary sat beside the suite window and opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter and a second silver drive.
My dearest Mary,
If this reaches you, then the truth survived longer than the people who tried to bury it.
I am sorry I did not speak sooner.
I wanted proof strong enough to protect you.
Instead, my silence may have placed you in greater danger.
Mary stopped reading.
Her father had never blamed her.
Even in his final warning, he blamed himself.
She continued.
Charles Cole is not the beginning of this conspiracy.
He is a participant.
Someone inside Whitmore Capital introduced him to the shell companies twenty-two years ago.
That person also forged your mother’s authorization.
I once believed the fraud ended after Catherine died.
I was wrong.
The letter instructed Mary to open the drive on an isolated computer.
Rebecca joined her an hour later.
The drive contained corporate records dating back more than two decades.
Payments moved through companies in New York, London, Singapore, and Zurich.
Charles had received a portion.
Someone else had received more.
The final beneficiary was hidden behind the initials A.W.
Mary searched the historical board records.
No director matched the initials.
Rebecca examined the trust documents.
One name appeared repeatedly.
Alexander Whitmore.
Thomas’s older brother.
Mary’s uncle had supposedly died in a boating accident when she was twelve.
No body had ever been recovered.
The family held a memorial after authorities found his empty boat.
Mary remembered Alexander as charming and restless.
He used to bring her gifts from overseas.
After his disappearance, no one discussed him.
Rebecca opened the final video file.
A man sat in a dark room.
Only half his face was visible.
He was older than Mary remembered.
But she recognized him.
Alexander Whitmore looked into the camera.
“Thomas believes I am dead.”
“He has always underestimated what I am willing to sacrifice.”
The date on the recording was six months after Alexander’s supposed accident.
Mary’s pulse quickened.
The video continued.
“Charles will handle the American accounts.”
“Julian will take the blame if anything goes wrong.”
“And one day, Mary will inherit a company too damaged to control.”
The recording ended.
Rebecca stared at the blank screen.
“If Alexander is alive, he has been hiding for more than twenty years.”
Mary looked at her father’s letter.
The final line contained an address in Switzerland.

Beneath it, Thomas had written a warning.
Do not go alone.
